1st thing I thought of was Main Relay. Your car will still turn over with a bad main relay. Just won't fire...

In my case the FITV caused a very very high idle (about 2900 RPM cold). When that happened, I don't recall what he described happening. Definitely worth checking out...kind of like preventive maintenance.
Do you have aftermarket plug wires? There were some on my car when I bought it. They were Accel wires...garbage. They were causing the engine to misfire. I replaced them with some OEM wires and all is well.
As far as the exhaust goes, that price doesn't seem too bad. I would find a test...
The same thing would happen in my Prelude. It wasn't an engine issue, more like tired or weak motor mounts.
I never looked into it because I knew not to do what you are talking about.
If you think it is the TPS, perhaps you should test it to see if it is within spec.
