Today I got my oil changed and just got the normal filter and oil. They asked me if i wanted to do this and that and i said no. One thing was to use the new highmilage oil by valvoline. I have 139K on my car. Should i be using that oil or is normal 10w-30 fine?

I would just stick to normal stuff. I have 155 on my car, and have been using regular oil for as long as ive owned it.

i ran up 185,000 on my first car (accord) and all i used was regular oil. All this highmileage oil, or max life or something like that. I think they are all hype just to get money, untill i see some proof.

i have 376,xxx mi on my rex, and it still runs great. i just started usiing 5w30 and i defnitley feel more power when its cold. plus, its the weight honda recommends for my car.

as for engine oil addditives...ive used slick 50 like religiously (every 50k mi) and i beleive that is why my car still runs like new. i am switching to prolong though cause ive seen tests where it totally outperforms slick 50 and duralube. you will notice an improvement in performance when you use an additive like slick 50 cause it makes the parts work more smoothly, and the coating it creates increases compression slightly.

ive started using the high mileage formula oils just these past couple of oil changes, and they seem to make it run a little better. i think it maybe because its supposed to recondition worn seals and gaskets.

one other thing, keeping the engine's internals clean is good too. every now and then, i use rislone engine treatment (dissolves sludge and
varnish) and valvemedic (cleans and quiets valves)

i know it sounds like my engine shod be a dog on its last breath, but i just kicked the ass of a newer dodge dakota pickup truck last night! and dont even suggest he wasnt trying cause it was 1am on a residential street and we both ended up at 70 MPH!! then he had to slow down and get BEHIND ME so he wouldnt miss his turn! sucka!! :)

i work at an isuzu/mitsubishi dealership, and their 'premium' oil change service consists of durablend oil and an additive called krex.

this krex stuff containes graphite, which is supposed to reduce friction.. but this stuff takes sooo long to work out of your system. my dad was using it for a short while, and when he stopped it took like 5 oil changes before his oil looked normal and wasnt silvery in color from the krex.
so you know this stuff had to end up getting built-up inside the engine and clogging up the filter real nice..

376,xxx miles?!?!?!!? DAMN. thats a shit load of miles. and ditto on the slick 50 its good stuff. I use it too.

here's an old school trick for you. . .. about every 10k miles or so change your oil and add 1 quart of ATF. put a 100 miles or so on your car then drain it all out. . . ATF has detergents in it = good for engine

i agree with the ATF thing...though ive never used it, i beleive in keeping the insides clean :) ..and its easy to put as many miles as i have on a car when you commute 80 miles a day plus all the other driving i do. i also used to deliver pizzas with my rex. honda engines will last forever if taken care of :)

Honda recommends not using oil additives. I tend to believe what the Honda engineers tell me.

thats true if your car is like 5 years old with less than 100,000mi on it, but when that mileage starts getting up there, you gotta use something to battle engine wear..and sludge. my healthy 376,000mi dx engine is proof enough for me that additives help if youve got more than 100k, or are starting to lose compression due to wear. :)

and BTW, thats a 376,000mi non-rebuilt engine

another use for ATF fluid.
We used to get a bottle of ATF and secure it in the engine bay, pull a vaccuum line and then put the vaccuum line in the bottle of ATF. Oh be ready for a hell of a smoke show, ATF burns bigtime, but at the same time it helps remove carbon deposits from the combustion chamber and valves.

yeah, thats works great as a top engine cleaner. . .but you can destroy your cat and possibly your o2 sensor(s) too. not recommended for cars with catalytic converters

shit, i just realized what ATF is..auto tranny fluid??!! i thought u guys were just talkin about another brand of oil additive.

I'll bet riceboy uses synthetic oil...am I right?

Good synthetic oil and honda's precise building specs = cars that arent even broken in at 400k :) My dad's 1st '87 accord got to 374k before he decided to retire it...and it wasn't even burning any oil or giving him any trouble...he just wanted more options. So he went and got an '87 LX-i, which now has 345k miles and burns about 1qt of oil every 5k miles.

BTW how would you sell a car with 400k miles on it?

"1987 Honda Accord LX-i HB
Pwr windows, cruise, Ice cold A/C
375k miles, runs like new"

WTF?

i prolly should be using synthetic, but it is expensive. i usually use regular oil or semi-synthetic, but last two times i used the high-mileage formula stuff, and am pretty happy with it.

as far as selling it, it would only take a test drive to convince anyone that the car is still good, and it is so well kept on the outside, about 2 mo.s ago a guy actually made me roll my window down on the freeway so he could ask me if i was selling it. ive had guys at gas stations ask me if i am selling it too. also, one of the mechanics where i take it was asking me if i wanted to sell it too...i swear i am not making this stuff up.

anyways, i am planning to swap a b16 in it some time in the future, so that would effectively lower the engine mileage...and the car has never been in an accident.

i was on the verge of trading it in and getting a new 2003 corolla until i realized it had so much potential. i have looked up its value on 3 different websites including kelly blue book and it says even with my mileage, in excellent condition, it is worth about $3000 on the open market (not trade-in). if you dont beleive me, go to the kelly blue book site and check it out.

MY BABY..
