im looking at getting a 1999 Dodge Neon as a daily driver. its 4 door, has the 2.0L SOHC motor in it, automatic transmission and drives pretty damn good. are these cars worth having as a daily? im not going to do anything to it, i just need a cheap and economical car to get me around town, to work and if need be a trip or 2 to Virginia (im in Indiana). so if anyone can gimme input on these, it would be great!!

For a DD, i'd rock a neon. Inexpensive car that gets decent gas mileage, and is extremely unlikely to get broken into and/or stolen.

that makes absolutely no sense...you're telling me you'd rather walk everywhere than drive? shit, I'd drive a rusted-out 85 Ford Econoline if it was a choice between that and walking the ten miles to work every day.

if you want ease of maintenance, GET THE SOHC.
this DOHC is kicking my ass. Converting to manual is cake... for the SOHC.

They all have lots of issues, but luckily there small issues that are cheap to fix. If your car spits and sputters and stalls a lot, most likely its a bad ECU. They can be had cheap on Ebay.
SOHC is a lot less maintenance but I read that the autos suck. Get a tranny cooler and change the fluid ASAP. Clean out the TB real good, it will make it idle and run at part throttle a LOT smoother. allpar.com is where I was getting a lot of info from.

I have no experience with the slushbox. But my friend had one in his highline, and he said it sucked. Never shifted right (He owned it since new).
The swap is easier than installing an oil cooler. Again, SOHC. DOHC tranny swap may or may not be harder. But doing EVERYTHING with the DOHC motor turns into a nightmare.

I dont know man, I have the DOHC neon and it gets pretty good gas mileage. I will take the run of the mill Civic's in a race without a sweat. It may very well run with some of the swapped ones if the neon owner has a clue

my DOHC gets about 30 mpg, average. But to get it to move it requires lots of input (Floor the fucker)
The DOHC has something that I'm not used to in the honda: Torque. And that means that when you give it more gas, it responds by going faster. The Honda just makes more noise. I'm totally into Neons now that I understand them. It's america's only attempt at matching Japan's prowess around small cars (Cavaliers are Toyotas). SRT's are ok, but I'm a purist.
