22r is the one with the electonic fuel injection. The other motors are carb'd.

This is about the extent I know about these cars, other than you can sandwich pretty much whatever engine you want in the car. My uncle has had his so long that its almost considered an antique now. Its gone through 2 or 3 rebuilds and has had the body filled with foam and mudd and so much other crap so many times, that he actually swapped beds and has done a ton of stuff. He's going to stuff a v8 from a police car in it, thats been worked over.

I know these trucks are Celerity's jam.

22RE is the injected model (E). 22 is 2.4 liter, and it's the :LASER block (Light And Strong Easily Revved). I have a performance head for this engine sitting on my bench.

Reliable as all hell.
Torquey as hell for a 4 banger
Those tires installed without the appropriate front and rear gearing changes is going to be a dog. I got beat by city busses in mine, off the line
Highway, I got about 30mpg. No shit. Towards the end, I got 19 on a good day.
Rust rust rust. Toyota couldn't rust protect too well back then. this truck looks good, I would do what you can to protect it now.

This price is good for the rust belt, but if you're not in the rust belt, this is top-dollar for one. V8 swaps cost between $1400 and $2500, depending on your level of expertise and machining. Not including motor. Fords work best (Distributor up front)

This generation is one of the best trucks ever made, so it's never a bad idea. I have about 20% of mine still (In parts in the shed). If you need technical help with it, I can help.

I got 289k miles out of mine, before rust finally took it's life.

Ok, got it:

It's an automatic. Unfortunately, most Turbos are automatic. The Automatic transmission in this thing (even though it's been replaced) is one of the worst autos to ever hit the road.

This truck is worth more in parts than it is together, by far.

Also, this is an 89, not an 86.

There were about 1000 of these bad boys made in turbo. The turbo is certainly nice, but putting a turbo on this motor / this behemoth / those wheels and tires / that transmission has got to be the closest to gold plating a turd that Toyota has ever done.

What I would do:

Get the truck for half that price. Yes, in that condition.

Swap out the trans and engine (Mustang 5.0, 5 speed toyota trans, adaptor kit, aftermarket pedals and boosters)

Install turbo engine in a hot rod.

Sell gauges for $500, or install it in the hotrod and sell the hotrod for $10,000 all day long

Drive the 4runner to Canada next fall and sell it for $10,000 US.

Buy house. Then look for a 1987 4Runner from a rust free, high altitude (Like Utah). Drive it for the rest of your life.
