square headlights were available on gti's i owned on it was an 88. they didn't come as standard equipment until the 90 gti's then those had the four round headlights, things to look for that identify it as a gti are the red pin stripe all the way around on the interior, no door side moldings, and the roof mount antenna. those are distinct on only gti's if it missing those then it most likely is a fake, none the less it was the same car.

I'm sure its NOT the Rallye front end as those lights are stupid expensive.

The square headlights came on all MK2 GTI's (this is a 92):

The 4 round lights were an option on the 90-92 GTI's...most came w/them

and the single round headlights are aftermarket:

its not a trim level thing either...there are 8v's w/the round lights and 16v's w/square

its are irrelevant anyway as the radiator support is a bolt in and you can put whichever setup you want on the car for about $200

this one has the 8v motor in it and looks just like the first pic, it has gti on the seats and has the red pin strip going all the way around the dash and all,the guy was cool about it untill i went to get it then he jumped the price up a few hundred so i told him i might get it when i get back from my trip,.

VW's are blasphemy on a honda website. I love all cars but when it comes to VW i throw up in my mouth a little bit.
