Default would like some advice

Alright I got a job like 200 miles west from where I live in a little sking town called Basalt, Co. I have to sell my car, and get an all wheel drive car so I can get around up there. I wish i could keep my car but at the end of the day it has to bite the bullet so I can further my career. I need something all wheel drive and preferably manual. Any suggestions? I do still want a car that is quick and something I can put some work into. I have been looking at subaru Impreza RS, Audi 90 quattro, audi a6 wagons, and volvo s70 so far. I would also prefer not to get a wagon don't mind a sedan. But then again at the end of the day the only real need out of this car is good gas mileage, and all wheel drive. So help me out what do you think guys?

No such thing as economical 4WD vehicle. All those mechanics, it costs to move them around.

Your best bet is an 80s Subaru anything.

And none of those cars will be mildly quick given today's standard economical family hauler will be faster.

That means a slow car with poor gas mileage. Its better to go into this thing with realistic expectations. With that in mind, just pick up a cheap, slow, subaru or audi.

what about a small 4x4 SUV like a Chevy S-10 Blazer or a Ford Explorer? sure they arent gonna be quick, but they will have the ground clearance needed since you are going to be in a ski resort area thats gonna have alot of snow.

Are you driving 200 miles there and 200 miles back everyday? If so it better pay extremely well. 400 miles a day is going to kill you with gas. It might cost you more to go to work than its worth.
If you are moving there, its almost spring so just keep your car until the fall and then buy something awd.

My commute from Colorado Springs to Denver was 67 miles one way, but it was a 45 minute drive, it didn't seem so bad.

You know where 45 minute commutes get you in the NE. 1 town over.

I would keep it "gangsta" and buy a Honda CR-V, put a vtec head on it and boost it.

f- that driving there and back nah. I am moving up there. I would love an impreza rs. but I ended up with a hand me down. my dad's subaru outback. 2.5 liter still gets 32 mpg, all wheel drive, cd player, plus enough cargo space to move a lot of my stuff on the first trip up there. I am still gonna sell my car so I can pick up hopefully a 90-93 integra as a project. I figure working on a wagon would be fun to an extent but I really want an integra again and there is one I am interested in that is cheap as hell and only needs a new head gasket. Something I figure I would replace anyways so tops a $100 fix to have a decent running project integra. I think its worth it. Not to mention I get rid of my car payment each month, and for how cheap this Integra is put some money in the bank to have in case of a rainy day. I think it worked out well. Thanks for your help guys. By the way I didn't know the Suzuki Swifts were awd? thats crazy. should I ever decide to build a suzuki I know what I am going with.

I was thinking about the s-10 blazer the two door blazers with the 3.7 are sick. I wouldn't mind getting one of those someday either but for now I am more than happy to cut my bills an extra $250 a month, maybe even more considering insurance may go down.

What about those new Suzuki SX4s? The hatches are AWD and start around $15k.

hmmmm....nothing really worth parting out. I had just started to mod the motor, and I didn't get far. I started with the y8 swap, arp head studs, and a new head gasket, got some headers, a high flow cat, and began redoing the exhaust.

Like I mentioned before I got a hand me down that is in really good shape. I personally just did the 4 wheel brake job on this car all new rotors and pads, new tires, oil change, new air filter, headlights, even new wipers. So its not exactly what I wanted but I can't complain. Its exactly what I needed. Which at the end of the day is more important. Like I said before this gives me a prime oppurunity to consolidate my debt so to speak by selling my civic, and my trans am. Then buying a cheap project car that needs some minor work. Pay it off right away so I don't have to deal with car payments, and insurance will be cheaper on the cars I am looking at right now. So far I was looking at an 88 crx with an ls swap, for like $1200 (it has body damage nothing to difficult to fix.), a 92 Integra ls that has minor body damage as well, and a 91 integra that has a blown head gasket. so for now that is where I am at.
