Bah, FCU will only give me 15k without a co-signer. It's not a big deal really, my parents will do it. I just wanted to do it on my own. I have great credit and my income/debt is fine. Just that I've never had a car loan before.

 Good for you! Don't let those skeezy salesmen play you.

True. It might be worth your time to read up on dealer sales tactics...hold on...I have a link...:

Confessions of a Car Salesman

I worked at a Honda dealership for a week. Never sold a car. One of the sales managers brought me to a training room and started to describe to me what I had to do when customer came on the lot.

One of the things they told me to do was, when evaluating the trade-in vehicle, to walk around it, and don't say anything about the car, but, look concerned, rub any dents or scratches, feel the tires if they were balding or worn, and otherwise physically point out any problems but don't SAY anything about them.

This is done to devalue the car in the buyer's mind. So, they might come down on the vehicle price but then only give you $1000 for your 2007 F150 b/c it has bad tires. Most people get fucked on the trade b/c they don't pay attention to it.

Definitely read that article though...

When negotiating you always have to set high goals.

You can start out with high goals and work your way down to reasonable goals, but very rarely can you negotiate from a low goal to a high goal.

Always have your end goal in mind.

Whenever negotiating, the tactic is to devalue the other person's offer. People are just naive to realize that this is done unconsciously by amateur negotiators.

My clients nearly always tell me that my service is a commodity. My job is to build value in the service I offer, while their goal is de-value the service I offer. Competitive negotiations have this result. Any transactional sale will be a competitive negotiation. Win-lose.

Find the same model on automax.com.. get the best price, print it out, and bring it with you. Slap it down, and tell them "Beat this, or I'm buying it from them".

They fucking hate it when that happens.

My problem is, I want to pay much less then any of best prices you can find online. Plus if you do that they will agree and say once you add tax tags, title fees this is your total Even with it 500 less then the sales ad it will still be at least 500-1000 more.

lets not forget the dealer fees that are not listed.

They will stick it to you one way or another.

Actually a commodity transaction can be non-competitive in some cases. I forget the actual terminology but on going business and longevity play a large part in making the negotiation more win-win.

Now short term transactional-sale is to increase your benefits to the heighest amount of value versus there.

There's competitive negotiations and collaborative negotiations. Depending which company you listen to, there may be a third dimension as well. This was ripped from a slide that quotes Harvard's view on negotiations. They just re-name what I dubbed as competitive and collaborative.

Distributive negotiations
Involve win–lose, fixed-amount situations wherein one party’s gain is another party’s loss.

Integrative negotiations
Involve joint problem solving to achieve results benefiting both parties.

Look at the definition of distributive negotiations. When you're negotiating what is viewed as a commodity (which by definition can be obtained from many different sources) the situation is win-lose barring elegant negotiables (items that to yourself have very little worth and to the other party have a high value).

When Ian haggles $500 off the purchase price of the car, the salesman and dealership lose $500 of profit. This is a win-lose situation.

The only way that the situation could become a win-win situation is by negotiating on some other sort of elegant negotiable. Take for instance, Ian somehow can guarantee that 3 of his friends or family members will purchase vehicles from the dealership. This would secure residual income for the dealership and thus be a point of negotiation outside of the actual transaction for the car.

You have to be very good at negotiating and you have to be working with another creative individual to have negotiations like that take place in a car dealership.

I negotiate outside of the sale constantly, by positioning my company's resources (tech resources, subsidies, help lines, personnel, etc., etc) and I work in an industry of commodities. However, my negotiations are very different from single point of purchase transactions.

A smart dealership can perhaps negotiate extra services or perks - free car washes for cars bought at the dealership, loaner cars for oil changes of all vehicles purchased from the dealership whether they're luxury brand or not, etc.,etc - but as an individual to bring something else to the table is very difficult.

If you had 2 of your friends in the market for vehicles and they came with you, well then now you suddenly have an elegant negotiable.

J, I do this stuff for a living, not just in a college class. ;):p

doesnt look like they have subarus on there

Not really. I want awd. At this point I know what car I want, I just need to find someone willing to sell it for what I want to pay.

A little bit off topic, but have you considered trying to buy a house/condo instead? Not sure what the market is like in that area dollar-wise, but that 8k tax credit is pretty appealing right now.

Sorry for the threadjack.

really its a little early for me to be looking at houses. and i really cant afford it just yet. when my gf moves to MD from WV when shes done with school and able to help out with expenses, then i will probably look for a place.

but for now im needing a new car. :)

I would get the WRX, after working for a Subaru dealership i see why so many owners keep them forever or trade them for another newer model.

We have an STI and a 2 wrx's. One of them is msrp's at $26,130. White pearl with black interior. I'm sure we will sell it for arounf 25.500 or something.

From personally driving it its a great car. great commuter and it doesnt take much for the turbo to spool up when you hit the pedal. it's bad ass.

if you want to lean more toward the luxury status i would get the TL. still peppy, modern and stylish
