I was working on my friends teg fixing a bad front swap to ITR. it has a ls/vtech motor. i had to remove the headlights and took a picture of how the wires were connected so i wouldn't get them confused later. when i was done i wired the lights back up and when i would turn them on the car would die. the battery was bad on the car and i figured this was the issue. we replaced the battery and it was still running bad, it started backfiring, vtech wouldn't kick in, etc. he called a friend of his to come check it out and he said that i had wired up the lights wrong causing a short that fried the ecu. is this possible. if i wired them up wrong causing a short wouldn't that pop a fuse or something. the lights all worked correctly. i do know that right after i had the car he ha changed the fuel injectors to gsr when he installed them the car wouldn't stay running at idle it would die. the idle adjustment was all the way adjusted so he advanced the timing so the car would stay running. the other thing is that his swap has a bunch of jerry-rigged wiring that would be questionable. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

It's doubtful the headlights had any impact on the ecu. The only way it could would be if it shorted to some other bare wires. I would start looking at the other wiring before the headlights.

itr and gsr injectors, assuming the same odb generation, are identical 240cc.

if the ecu was fried, the car wouldn't turn on at all. it wouldn't even attempt to crank over.

the headlights aren't attached to the ecu. unless some hackery on the interior harness of the car/fuse box area connected it to engine control wires, there's really no way that could happen.

as you stated, it sounds like the wiring job is a hack job. I'd start there... maybe even start with a new harness and do it right this time if it's beyond repair.

And please, it's VTEC.
