During the interview, don't just pitch the power builds. Say something like, "ya know, if this were a real sales pitch, I would create the power build, then I would go for the upsell. i would tell the customer he needs traction, tires, suspension, brakes and tuning. I'd build out a timeline and create a lifetime customer. don't just build the engine and let him drive away, make a 2 year build plan and have them coming in regularly. Also, if he can build a 1000 hp Supra, he has friends. Let's bring his club in for an event or something."

The dude will LOVE that shit.

If that's your thing, take nick's advice.

Personally, I don't think I'd like to get into my hobby as a source of income. And they don't pay nearly as well as an above mentioned job.

exactly. this is just a "job".

career>>>>>>job

It's Real St. Visit the website. Record holding cars, huuuuge sales department, high class clients, expensive builds. I may sound like a fan boy typing this but if I can get the income where I need it why not do what I love? Sell shit AND be around fast cars, go to events, shows, etc.

The wife's income takes a huge burden off me. granted we will have student loans and other bills to pay but in the grand scheme of things I feel it's about time I do something for myself. obviously be responsible about it when it comes to income. We've done the budget. If I can bring in 50k that will be enough to save AND be able to live a little more comfortable than what we have now. I made 80k last yr and it flew past me. no saturdays, long hours, 24/7 on call (internet sales). even my days off I would have to come in, just felt like I was here all the time.

NIck: I freaking love that idea and will be using it. thanks a bunch

Should I start a new thread or can I ask my imaginary builds here in the same thread? I'm on the RSX right now. Was getting carried away with doing a full rebuild and though....holy shit that's a lot of money. So I'm starting with piecing a turbo kit. Then move from there to see what would need to be upgraded. fuel, internals, cooling, clutch etc..remember that i'm choosing from the website.

I would just break it out by car like you had before and just start listing parts. do it within this thread. it would help if you gave people the link to the site though.

I was thinking about his question a little more, and this is my business brain. Building a car for a customer is more than just reaching a number. You are going to want reliability, time of install on parts, and most of all, the MARGIN on your sales. You might be able to slap on a pre-built kit and make a higher margin or you can piece something together for cheaper than a kit and sell it for more.

Your job it to generate profit, not just sell stuff. If you can hit the numbers while being more profitable, your better than the next sales guy.

or you could break it out by component:

Rsx:
Engine mods:
Forced induction
turbo
IC
Fuel: blah
injectors:blah
rail: blah
EMS: blah
etc: blah

OK thanks man. I'll be working on this tonight too...AFTER my 4 hour drive down to Orlando :/

  • 44mm Tial WG $369.99

  • Cometic HG $98.24
  • ACL Mains/Rods $ 158.64
  • Oem Oil Pump $204.78

And here Mr. Customer is just the essentials. I'd like to recommend an overal goal including preventative maintenance and improvments such as cylinder head components. valve springs, retainers, cams, fresh water pump, etc. Suspension, tires for traction and some other bits a pieces that will compliment the build for an even more reliable and healthy motor for many more years.

NOW: Clearly some of these can be replaced with other parts, etc. but the question at hand is can these parts acheive 500hp out of a stock rsx.
Also would lke to point out that if some parts arent listed it's because I could not find them so no pricing was available.

It's kind of difficult to answer a relative answer like the one that was asked without more specifics but Nick I think you nailed it on the long term sales goal.

I'm gonna need help on the Supra. not very knowledgeable on the 2jz platorm. I've only heard of stock blocks holding 1000hp.
So Im gonna start with fuel delivery and work my way up.

What nick said...

PLUS, HP isn't the only goal. start there.

daily driving w/ street tune 400, track 800 is a different build than a pure race car 800 hp. different clutch type, different spring rates for the rear suspension, etc.

UNDERSTAND the customer's needs above and beyond a power goal.

is it to run 10s? with interior? ac? (will dictate manifold type maybe...)
is 800 at the crank or wheels?

and how reliable does it need to be?

Totally agree which is why I didn't get I to a full motor build.illne sure to mention my points with each car. As mentioned before it's a very relative and personally, forum noob type of question. Unless it's a trick question......

The supra will be the easy one. there are probably 500, 1000hp builds in the u.s. Usually it's throwing on a t88 turbo and tune. lol

maybe you should go back and ask him if they will be street or track cars, or what is the purpose behind the goal so you can work out a build to fit their needs.

eh, i wouldn't ask anything more. I would just say, "you asked for this type of power build and here are my assumptions. 1) it's a daily driver 2) it needs to pass smog 3)...blah blah blah".

Just set the conversation from the beginning.

All he did was ask me what type of pump, turbo, injector size, etc I used and why. he wanted to see how much I knew and how much I could learn.

I really hope they picked me but they've got 15 other people to interview. Nervous.

They liked my videos and sales back ground. I think I nailed the interview :)

wow, i didn't realize it was today. lol that wasn't much time to prepare.

wow, i didn't realize it was today. lol that wasn't much time to prepare.
yeah I know. Now that i'm slowed down a bit I'll explain more of how it went. First and foremost I was just happy to get a response. I rushed through the S2000 and kept it a stock bottom end. Didn't even get to the evo so i was a little nervous.

I walk in, admire the showroom. it's amazing. Wait for them to come get me. I meet the sales manager and the general manager (GEO w/ lambo killer supra).
They ask me what skills make me stand out in my current job. I explained professionally.
He then asked what my first car was. So i explained, Honda CRX single cam. mini me swap, then LSvtec CRX, onto a fully built lsvtec, BREAK FOR A COUPLE YEARS, Acura RSX with bolt ons, WRX and now retarded Sti.

He wanted to know if I was into cars BEFORE sales career. Also wanted to know how much I knew. He made me describe an engines moving parts from top to bottom. I picked a Subaru so lets just say side to side. lol. Also wanted to know my extent of modding. bolt on type of guy or internal builder type. I answered honestly that internals, tight tolerances I leave to the pro's. I'll put a cylinder head on, I'll install and engine but internals just aren't my thing. header, turbo, injectors, exhaust, custom thinking yeah... but that's about it.

We then went over the cars he recommended me to 'build'. He said he purposely chose to be vague in his request because those may be the type of calls I'll get. Obviously i'll handle it accordingly but he was curious of my knowledge of honda, toyota, evo, type of fuels, turbo knowledge, injector sizes etc.

Honda - I explained what I would have requested but thankfully he made it easy by asking me random parts questions.
what type of fuel pump - AEM 320 in tank
Type of injector - ID725's
What type of turbo, what size, why the size, what size hotside

I had that covered :)

On to the 2jZ motor
What size turbo
what size injectors - ID2000
what about fuel? dual pump hanger and twin 340's
I recommended cams, springs, retainers etc and explained why
He asked about the block. I told him while I'm not as knowledgeable about the engine my quick research showed the block on E85 could support 1000hp.

S2000 is where it slowed down a bit.
i didn't recommend block internals because I didn't get to it. and thank goodness. Apparently you can't just throw in CP pistons on the F22C. He asked if I knew that and I honestly answered no. My Honda adventures pretty much ended with the B series. It' wasnt a bad thing. He said it was cool. It's something that can easily be trained.
6766 turbo
ID1000's
head work, internals etc. and we started to chat about other stuff and what they are looking for.

Asked if I spoke spanish which was a huge plus! He liked my videos in my resume. I'm the face of Subaru in a sense to 'how to' videos and such are my thing. We have a youtube page. They liked that about me.

I'm nervous and excited just typing this. There are many other people wanting the job so hope I gave a good enough impression to get called back. :)
REAL St. is no longer a "shop" for cars. After talking to them and seeing the 20,000squ ft. building I see it's a corp. a process driven company. They way they presented themselves, the way they were dressed, etc.

If i get it great. If not. oh well. :)

P.S i threw in a Hondaswap plug as my source of how i learned much of Honda back in the day. ;)
