You will probably need to submit a copy of your W-2 and any other forms showing CA withholding.
My guess is the payroll processor had a fat finger error when inputting the information that eventually made its way to CA.
Its odd that the W2 would show one amount but a different amount gets reported to the state but I've seen it many times, usually with the IRS, but NYS is known to stroke out from time to time as well.

Ya, I wasn't even sure how that can possibly happen. lol

Does your W2 match you last paystub?
I've seen that get messed up in translation as well.
yes it does. I have 2 W2's, one with $12,000 and one with $2,000 in state taxes paid. I'm having a hard time figuring out where the $4,000 number even came from...??

we had our taxes prepared and together we got a bunch back. i was surprised!

Word. I got a decent return. All the student interest, school fees, etc. Next year we'll have an additional write off so that will be interesting, but our income will probably go up another 10-15% again.

sounds like you got snagged by an automatic check.
NYS uses income tax withholding on W2's and 1099's to verify the return being filed is not fraudulent.
If the W/H reported to NYS does not match what you report on your return, the return gets kicked out for additional processing which usually means you have to submit the forms.
in 2016 NYS systems kicked out between 290k-300k fraudulent tax returns saving about half a billion in fraudulent refunds.

Ah, interesting. Luckily I keep my nose clean. :)

After submitting my documents, everything is straightened out and I should expect my refund in about 4 weeks. How bizarre this was..

For those of you who file your own taxes, which software do you use? I've used TurboTax for probably 10 years with no issues. I thought since this year was going to be a bit more complicated, I would check out H&R Block. But i'm having issues with the software and thought I'd ask you guys.

p.s. The issue I'm having is with 1099-Misc. box 8, substitute payments. I can't find where to enter the info. I've posted on the H&R forum to see what people say.

Try TurboTax and TaxSlayer, they might help. I wont have this problem until next year. :)

What I used to do was go through a few of them and try to enter in all my information to see which fit my needs best. You don't have to pay for any of them until you're actually ready to submit.

That's what I'm in the process of. I have already completed (but not filed) my taxes in TurboTax and have my return value. With all the new stuff I thought I'd run through H&R to see if the total comes out the same. I can't find all the info their to validate the filing.
