My son and I just replaced the input shaft bearing on his 2004 civic dx. Everything lined up when we put it back together, but now that it is back in, it does not appear to have a neutral. I can start the car with the clutch in but cannot find neutral. When we push the car back and forth in the garage we hear a click click click in the transmission. One thing I am not sure we did correctly was getting the c ring back into the top of the input shaft. I am hoping I can remove the gear selector (shifter?) and manipulate something to get it working without having to remove the transmission. We also swapped the engine and that works fine. May have some questions at some point about the dx to vtec swap. But for right now I want to get the transmission fixed. Any ideas as to what I may have done wrong?

Thanks in Advance.

you should be able to get the plug on the end of the input shaft out and check to see if the snap ring is seated...unless you did something wrong with the shift linkage though, it's almost certainly going to require pulling the transmission back out.

I pulled it out today. I am not sure what was wrong but I could not fix it just by messing with the linkage. Watching the videos, I hear them say to make sure you have it in neutral before you put the case back on. Do you know how to know when it is in neutral? I need to find a good tutorial that shows me exactly how everything should be lined up before putting the case back on.

Thanks for replying.

Pardon me for this, but need to clarify in my mind..
Are you talking about the "INPUT SHAFT" of the transmission (that goes into the flywheel,) or the axle shaft that goes into the side(s) of your manual transmission?

You can usually get a long heavy philips screwdriver in the shifter shaft hole (where that damn pin goes) and push or pull to find neutral. There are little springs inside that keep the shaft in neutral "if" the forks inside aren't applied fwd or aft. It should feel like 3 detents.
1-all the way in
2-neutral (will be able to swing a little side to side)
3-all the way out.
Total movement is only about 1-1.5"
