Any of you guys ever go to the Outer Banks?
Looks like I might head down in October, found a little beach front house on HomeAway for a reasonable price.
Not sure if everything will be shut down that time of year since its off-season.

Welcome any opinions or advice.

Yes!

For the past 10 years my wife and I have been going to Corolla/Duck for her families get togethers. They are all from WV/VA. We typically rent 10-15 bedroom homes on the beach. Love OBX! I've never stayed anywhere south of Duck, nor I have never stayed on the sound side. My favorite homes are up the beach (no roads, drive on sand).

Off season is much cheaper.

Here are some of the homes we stayed at. We have always rented through Twiddy. Let me know if you have questions.

We had issues with the houses twiddy had in inventory the last few years, so we switched to brindley beach.

Very cool place, I enjoy it every year. I'll post up some of my favorite places to go in a bit when I get to a real keyboard.

Been there a few times. Trips centered on a century ride (100 mile bicycle ride) down there the first weekend in May. Stayed in Emerald Isle, traveled to and through Atlantic Beach, Morehead City, Beaufort, Harkers Island, Swansboro, Jacksonville.

First weekend in May is still pretty much early to off season. During the week it is fairly empty, most businesses are open, but it is pretty quiet. Weekends fill up a bit more, but still fairly light. You can still travel around pretty freely, restaurants will be more full.

Emerald Isle through to Atlantic Beach are very laid back ocean communities
Morehead City and Beaufort while not technically "Outer Banks" being that they are mainland, are awesome little towns/cities with a lot of character.
Swansboro and more so Jacksonville (butts up against Camp Lejeune Marine Base) are more what you would expect of small cities (think Kingston and Poughkeepsie)

October should be pretty quiet, and you should be clear of hurricane season.

All in all, its a very cool place. I look forward to going back soon.

If you're going in October, it's off-season. Not many of the businesses will be closed yet, they tend to close in the late October. The grocery stores downsize their staff around Halloween and the smaller shops close up. Air temperatures are much cooler, but the ocean is still a little warm, so it's very nice that time of year.

If you have reliable 4x4, you can rent a place up the beach road. Prices are a lot lower, but you're also a lot more isolated. My family doesn't all have 4x4 vehicles suitable for beach road travel, and y'all have seen my RamCharger, so yeah. We don't rent a house up that way because of that. I'm more of a fan of places without private beach access, because you get more for your money with shared beach access, but it's a trade off. I like both, lol.

Corolla is nice, but the traffic sucks -- again, the tourist population is mostly gone in October. Duck is always a cluster, but with 1/4 the people, it's nice.

If you're on my facebook, I just made a post soliciting places to go/things to do. We're going this year in like August (I think, I'd have to check) so it'll benefit both of us. ;)

I'll actually be there the last week of Oct/beginning of November.
Hopefully places are still open but I'm expecting it to be a very laid back type of vacation.
Might bring the bikes to ride or something. I don't sit well for longs periods of time, typically need to be doing something or I get bored out of my mind and restless.

The place I found was through Cove Realty (via Homeaway).

It's not a huge place but it's right on the beach. We've only got 4 people and 2 small dogs so I couldn't justify a giant place.
Taking OL's parents as a thank you for taking us to Disney in May.

Those 10-15 bedroom houses look like a lot of fun for a large group.
The RAV4 is AWD but very much all-season tires that I wouldn't really trust driving on the beach.
It does have a "sand" driving mode, but I'd prefer something that isn't a brand new crossover for that type of adventure the first time out.

We don't take my wife's CR-V out on the sand, but that's mostly because I don't want it to rust to shit in a few years. As you're leaving the OBX, make sure you hit a car wash on 158, 17, or 64 once you get inland a bit. I wouldn't take a brand new unknown-capability SUV out, although I did take a rental jeep liberty out one year, lol.

I've never been out on any courses out that way, but they should be pretty empty, like not even call ahead for a tee time empty, lol.

That place looks nice, you're pretty far south, a bike or pair of bikes would be good to bring, but you can rent them instead, and you don't have to travel with them that way.

We're probably bringing a small 4x8 trailer this year, because my daughter's bike and play-things are starting to take up a lot of room, lol.

lol, my cousin made it up to Bubba's Beach House (~10 miles up the beach) in his wifes subaru outback. Just hose off when you're headed back home, you'll be fine. Also stay out of the wet sand.

Yes, our groups are usually 10-13 families. I love the isolation of the 4x4 area; especially the further you go up the beach.
