A FRIEND OF MINE RECENTLY GOT REAR-ENDED IN HIS CIVIC HATCH AND HES PARTING OUT HIS MOTOR...HES GOT A B16 AND HE SAID HE GIMME THE HEAD FOR 20 BUCKS!! PROBABLY THE BEST DEAL IVE GOTTEN IN A WHILE....BUT THERES A PROBLEM!!......I WENT TO HIS HOUSE TO GET THE HEAD WHICH IS STILL ON THE CAR AND I WAS THERE FOR ABOUT 4 HOURS TRYN TO UNDO THE BOLTS!! THE SHIT WAS TIGHT AS ALL HELL...ITS ALMOST BECOMING IMPOSIBLE TO GET THIS HEAD OFF OF THIS MOTOR!! I TRIED EVERYTHING!! I BROKE 3 SOCKET WRENCHES TRYING TO GET THIS OFF AND IT DIDNT EVEN BUDGE!! WHAT THE HELL DO I DO?? I CANT PASS A DEAL LIKE THIS UP BUT I HAVE NO CLUE HOW IM GONNA GET THIS HEAD OFF THIS DAMN CAR .THESE BOLTS ARE WAY TOO TIGHT !!! SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW THE HELL I GET THESE OFF CUZ I CERTAINLY AINT GONNA GET IT WITH A SOCKET WRENCH

im deffiantely turning it the right way but these bolts are on really tight!! i mean really tight!!!! im not too sure if thats normal or not but i dont think im gettin these things off, at least not by hand!!

I DIDNT EVEN WANT TO READ THIS CAUSE OF THE CAPS LOCK

but since I do have first hand experience doing this, i figured i try and help
mine did the same thing.
I used a breaker bar, and actually broke the breaker bar(with a pipe on the end of it).
I brought the engine to my school and used a 1" impact gun(yes 1" the thing will undo any bolt you could imagin) and it got them all.

But most people dont have access to a 1" impact gun. I say you should go buy a quality breaker bar, and try it. Mine were in the engine since 91 so they didnt want to come out.

a normal socket wrench aint gonna do it. if all else fails buy the whole engine. Hell, if hes sellin the head for 20 bucks, you could prolly get the whole package for under 200 bucks....

yah dude, the head bolts are hard to get off, but not THAT HARD. i got mine off with a simple breaker bar...one good pull and bam, the bolt was off.

ok so this breaker bar , is this a special tool or are yall just talkin about a round metal pipe that i just slide onto the handle of the socket wrench??

Lift some focking weights or something, its not like they are on all that tight....

you are a fool...

i had to take a head off a 95 LS with 230K miles on it...
took a 3/4" ratchet with a 4 foot pipe to get them to budge...

head bolts tend to get really seized in there, especially with lots of mileage on the engine...

don't know what the fuck a socket wrench is, but get some craftsman 1/2" or 3/4" tools... start with 1/2", break it, then go get 3/4"

a breaker bar is a ratchet minus the ratcheting effect... ratchets tend to break, so a breaker bar is just used to break the bolts loose...

and yes, pipes are your friend, and so are lifetime guarantee tools

socket wrench = ratchet

if you dont know what a breaker bar is you probaly should not be taking this head off. do you know the order in which you should take the bolts off and such so you dont warp the head. also did you remove the cas properly. but you are going to have problems it sounds like.

ok cool well whats the order that the bolts should be loosened up in??

head studs should be 65-80 ft lbs.
thats less than your wheels.

if they are on that freakin tight, i'd be concerned with hed warpage.

yes stock head studs torque to 65-80 -- but if they were perhaps replaced with some arp you might have some trouble .. took me an hour to get myne out with a 3 foot breaker..

as for order in removing them just like lugs.. x's guy to let the head come off the block evenly .. best i can desribe in short

um no
get a helms it will tell you or i think its work from outside to inside like this

1---7---9---6---4
3---5---10--8---2

see the thing is that these bolts may not be on all that tight but this is also the first time ive attempted to take a valve head off a car so im not really used to shit being on that tight.some of you were comparing it to the amount of force that your wheels are put on, but usually when i change my wheels i stand on the lug wrench and use my weight to break it. but anyway..i went and bought a breaker bar from sears. is about 18 inches long so hopefully it should work. also does anybody know the size of the bolt head offhand ?? i borrow a freinds 1/2 socket set but hes missing the 15mm and 17mm sockets so im so ass'd out if its one of these!!
