I'm going to my first autox on Monday. Down in Bremerton. I'm excited about it. I'm going to take out my sub and spare tire. Take out the sub at home, more than likely take the spare out once I get down there just in case I get a flat.

Any tips? Recommendations?

If they will allow it, ask to ride with someone experienced. Watch how they do things.

Definitely. There are two different times you get to walk the track as well. Everyone has to work the event. You get like 2 or 3 passes, so I was planning on taking it easy at least the first time. I have a fairly good understanding of how my car drives. The golf course I work at has a biiiig parking lot, so occasionally I experiment there. I'm the one that closes the gates up at night so no one is there obviously.

I've found that my car oversteers slightly if the pavement is clean and not dusty, which I prefer, I hate understeer. It understeers if it's dusty or even slightly wet though.

Im excited for you, id love to enter one. I would need, like you, some practice so i dont embarrass myself or break something. Good luck and i hope you do well, even for a first. All im missing for an autox event would be good rubber and a better sway bar.

Honestly you really don't need the better sway bar, it would help though. What percent would you say your tires are at? As long as your car is in a safe, drivable condition you can usually enter an autocross.

I would say go watch a couple first too, I used to go every weekend just to watch and talk to people about techniques and setups.

Well i have HKS springs, front camber kit and a rear strut bar. Sway bars are cheap and can give a tighter feel. I dont know my tire % but they just arnt a good compound, tread life is healthy but i dont feel safe in anything but dry pavement, even then.

Sorry I'm going to have to go against your guy's recommendations :P I might go early and watch the early morning runs though. I've been looking forward to this for quite awhile now.

Hey its all good, nothing wrong with a face first approach, you learn faster that way too.

Note: My car is in pretty decent shape, im sure i could enter with no problems. Honda checked out my car a month or so ago and i needed a tie rod and CV boot but other than that its good, did a nice camber and tire alignment.

Get a sway bar ASAP then. They make a huge difference in cornering. I'm not sure what all they have for the year car you have, but if you can I'd try and research what diameter sway bar people generally go with for your car. Myself I have a 22mm ITR sway bar with ASR subframe brace and ASR endlinks.

Oh and get some good tires too.

It's no problem, I'll do some poking around on the web to see if I can find some more info for you.

Ok I will. So far I've been very satisfied with them. They've done pretty much everything I've asked them to do. Handling is always really consistent, we'll see how the perform in a race oriented situation.

Just remember to not drive over your head, you dont have to be the fastest one there.

Yup, I know all about that, I used to ride track on my Kx 80. You have to ride at the speed you're comfortable with. You might have people all around you jumping all the big stuff, but if you're not comfortable with it then don't do it. You can't half ass a double or triple, you either commit to it or you don't.

I know you're going to be right, but I'm too impatient. Bad quality I know but ah well, at least it's structured and fairly safe. I'm not going to drive balls out, I'm going to make a nice smooth pass. My goal is to go through every gate and not hit a single cone, I'm not looking to be the fastest guy out there.

Ive been racing motocross since I could ride a bicycle and that is what my dad has always told me, being consistent wins more races than riding over your head.

tire pressure is a major deal , try to find somone thats running the same tires and ask what there running, once you get that down you can feel the rear of the car rotating better. You will be able to hit corners way faster and you want to brake before you get in a turn and always look ahead . The best thing is to ask a one of the best guys out there to ride with them its pretty crazy. Hope this helps

Oh my god today was so much fun.

I headed down to Bremerton around 9:00am with my friend. Got there and walked around and looked at cars and watched the morning runs. There were approximately 300 cars entered. The morning runs didn't get over until about 4:00-5:00ish, so I got tons of time to watch other people make passes around the course. Got to walk the track twice to get a good idea of the layout of the course.

My first run, I ran with an instructor in the car. I spun out once going through the tighter of the slalom sections. I didn't hit any cones though. The instructor told me that I did really well considering that was my first pass ever.

Second pass I ran by myself, I made it through the first 3/4 of the track quickly, but once again I got a little too aggressive in a slalom section and spun out. Didn't hit any cones though.

Third pass I made it through cleanly and ran it in 84 seconds (the fastest cars out of all the groups were turning about 65 seconds).

Overall it was an awesome experience, I learned how to better control my car and I met some really cool people.

I was very happy with the way my suspension performed. It stayed quite flat around turns. Only problem I had was the two spin outs and that was mainly due to my turning and trying to brake at the same time.
