recently I ran my car at the track and i ran a 14.6 against a 5.0 mustang's 15.1 but when i looked at the bottom of the time slip, it says i won by .388 ---- I looked at the reaction times and the mustang had a .225 while i had a .337 ----- so i assume that is the difference between my 1/4 mile time and the winning margin----my question is: since he was off the line first, why is the difference in reaction time taken off from the .5 difference in the 1/4 mile times instead of added?? if this is not because of the reaction time then can someone pls explain??

You have it correct, the difference of your reaction times is subtracted from the difference in 1/4 mile times; this give you who "won" the race. The 14.6 sec represents the amount of time it took to get from the start line to the finish line in the 1/4 mile.

ok, but the thing i still don't understand is he got off the line first, therefore, why wouldn't my margin of win be like .612 as if we had got off the line at the same time instead of it being .388

First Auron is cool, second look at what you said HE got off the line first (aka FASTER) so he was already .112 ahead of you before you stopped pickin your @$$ he decided to go. If you two got off the line at the EXACT SAME time the gap would have .500
