ok, so my cousin keeps bitching to me about "power shifting" has anyone heard of it? he claims you use it mainly for drag racing, 1/4mile... he wont explain it to me and tells me that he'll show me it when i go visit him later this month.

is he right about "power shifting" ? or should i tell him hes an idiot and whatever "power shifting" is, it's just messing up his clutch/tranny... whatever... etc

thanks everyone.

if you don't let off the gas it'll keep your rpms up and unless you can do it quick enough you'll end up bouncing off the rev limiter. It's not going to hurt you that bad to take your foot off the gas for that split second of slamming it into 2nd or 3rd.

It is retarded, does you no good, and damages your clutch and tranny. DON"T DO IT: Its for Ricers.

yea.

you will lose traction if you let it rev up. this technique will work on awd cars, since they got all the straight line traction, but even for them it damages the tranny.

haha, that's probably why he thinks he's going faster, because he loses traction and his wheels spin.

thanks for the quick replies. i'll make sure to link this thread to him, lol.

Just tell him that everyone on Hondaswap thinks he is a ricer. HA. :D I bet he talks about granny shifting too?

Yeah, power shifting in an AWD car is a REALLY bad idea. AWD systems are actually quite weak, and they are prone to lots of problems. Take Subaru, they only make AWD cars and my center diff. went out 2 times in a car that was NEVER driven hard. You really have to baby most AWD cars or you'll end up with lots of problems.

did you know that you can't "power shift" a lotus Esprit? well, according to the dude that owns a the coffee shop you can't <he has also owned 3 lotus (loti?)> i was under the impression that powershifting meant no clutch. but i guess i'm wrong. whats it called when you do clutches shifts? aside from being called an automatic. lol.

um....clutchless shifting? Thats the only thing I've heard it called. I duno if its bad to do, but its kind fun once in a while.

if it breaks build it better next time? it always my excuse to upgrade. lol

clutchless shifting is called slam shifting and thats about a milloin times worst then power shifting.

Um...I don't do anything that "slams" when I clutchless shift. I just pull the car out of gear, wait for the revs to drop, and the quick pop it into the next gear. I don't grind it or anything at all, it just slips into gear when you reach the correct rpm.

shifting w/out the clutch is called "rev matching".. you match the revolution of the engine to what it will be for that particular gear. When done correctly, it slides into gear w/ no grinding or ill effects on the tranny. However, it ain't easy to do correctly

Rev matching is when you're down shifting and you tap your gas to bump your rpms higher to match the lower gear. Do it a lot in road races.

Jesus, whatever happened to just learning how to actually drive? All these techniques will just happen if you practice and figure out what the best techinque is for each scenerio. What works for one, doesn't nescessarily work for you. The powershifting your cousin is refering to is retarded. I wouldn't try it unless you have an ECU that can hold XXXXrpm during the shift.

Sorry! but i don't think so. when you drive a semi that's how you shift trough gears. So i don't think it's bad!

But for "Power Shifting" i think that's a old technic used on old muscle cars?? I never heard a guy driving a Jap Car talk about "power shift", i mostly heard drivers of muscle cars talk about that..anyways..

power shifting is very common with mustangs, specifically with a nice T5 transmission, the tranny has very well matched gear ratio's and full synchro's

If you're after a few 10th's of a second in a 1/4 this is a good techniques to learn. it really only works well with a similar setup like the ford T5 transmission

Shifting with out the clutch I used to do all the time in my old suby 85 GL hatch. you've really got to know your shift points and the feel of your transmission as not to fuck anything up. and semi's can do this easily becausse the transmission are designed 100% different than a car or light truck.

What would be more appropriate to quicken a shift is the use of a sequential shift transmission

I read on hondatas website one of the upgrades that they have is a full throttle shift. It puts a rev limiter on it so that you can keep your foot pegged to the floor while you shift. Watch the video its pretty cool.
