IGNITION TIMING INSPECTION

1. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC), and check for DTC's. If a DTC is present, diagnose and repair the cause before inspecting the ignition timing.
2. Start the engine. Hold the engine at 3,000 rpm with no load (in Neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
3. Check the idle speed, and adjust it if necessary.
4. Follow the tester's prompts to get the tester in the "SCS" mode (see Tester Operator's Manual)
5. Connect the timing light to the No. 1 ignition coil wire.

6. Aim the light toward the pointer. Check the ignition timing under no load conditions: headlights, blower fan, and air conditioner are not operating. If the ignition timing differs from the specification below, replace the Engine Control Module (ECM).

Ignition Timing: 5° +/- 2° BTDC (RED mark) at idle in Neutral

Aiming Light Toward Pointer

7. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
8. Disconnect the HDS and the timing light.

SPARK PLUG INSPECTION
1. Inspect the electrodes and ceramic insulator.
    • Burned or worn electrodes may be caused by:
      o Advanced ignition timing
      o Loose spark plug
o Plug heat range too hot
      o Insufficient cooling
    • Fouled plug may be caused by:
      o Retarded ignition timing
      o Oil in combustion chamber
      o Incorrect spark plug gap
o Plug heat range too cold
      o Excessive idling/low speed running
      o Clogged air cleaner element
      o Deteriorated ignition coils

2. Do not adjust the gap of platinum tip plugs; replace the spark plug if the gap is out of specification.
  • Electrode Gap:
    • Standard (New): 1.0-1.1 mm (0.039-0.043 in.)
    • Service Limit: 1.3 mm (0.015 in.)

3. Replace the plug at the specified interval, or if the center electrode is rounded. Use only the spark plugs listed.
  • Spark Plugs:
    • NGK: PFR7G-11S
    • DENSO: PK22PR-L11S
4. Apply a small quantity of anti-seize compound to the plug threads, and screw the plugs into the cylinder head finger-tight. Then torque them to 25 N.m (2.5 kgf.m, 18 Ibf.ft).
