Does it go into 5th gear? If not, it's a four speed. No way to know without shifting in or out of the car.
If you do that, you should trust the seller before you just throw it in. If you don't trust them you'll want to check it's internals for condition or pay someone else to do so.
You'll never get a check engine light for the Temp Sensor. The cluster gauge uses a seperate sensor than the ECU. Either the sensor is going bad or you have a wiring issue (Corrosion causing partial wire break/loose connection, problem with gauge itself, etc.)
You can put a higher final drive on the old HF transmission if you want. You'll go through the gears faster for sure. But since you'll already have it torn down, you'd might as well fix the rest up as well; bearings etc.
Use 87-89 octane. In Japan they have higher numbers because of how they calculate their octane rating. In reality, they used the equivilent of our 87 octane there.
