Is the 89 an Si model? If so the TPS will work fine. If its a STD or DX it won't be the same. Also the map sensor on 88-91 Civic/CRX's is firewall mounted and usually 92-95 Civic is mounted on the throttle body. Although the 88-91 Map will work with yours as long as your's is not mounted on top...

I just did a swap for a friend and had the same situation with the clicking, Ended up being a loose ground on the starter. I would look around like the other poster said above for a loose or missing ground.
