i had that problem once,,,,ended up being air in the coolant,,,there is a valve to bleed the air located by the thermostat somewhere. are you throwing any codes?

you can use youre d16y7 distributor on youre y8 head on youre y7 block there is allready a spot on there located next to youre oil filter for the knock sensor to screw into, so its not hard at all to deal with that.
