I just got an 88 hatch with a 1st gen b16a. The mounts are "custom" according to the guy who sold it to me, so I am a bit suspicious of their quality. When I downshift from, say, 4th to 3rd, with the 3rd gear RPMs above 5k or so, there is a loud "clunk!" and the car is shaken for an instant...

i had a smilar problem years ago when i had an 89 integra. it was a bad distributor cap.

I just checked clearances on a USDM b16a2 short block out of a 2000 Civic Si. I put a short strip of plastigage on each position on the crank journals with the original/stock bearings in there and torqued it down to specification torque. I did not spin the crank at that time, just like the...

OK, thanks man. It is indeed a 1st-Gen b16a so it makes sense. That really makes me feel better. I have one more question, though: Should I have spring seats or is it possible that the springs just sit on the head itself? I have keepers and retainers but no seats. ??? :unsure:

I bought a head off that online auction place and I have 16 valve springs. 8 intake, 8 exhaust seemed right to me for a stock b16a. But, the .pdf service manual shows inner valve springs on the intake side. Am I missing 8 of these or am I reading the manual incorrectly? Thanks. :unsure:

I appreciate the responses. I emailed the Earl guy and am waiting for a reponse. I figure the ACL's are good quality but I want to build the engine as perfectly as I am capable and the color-coded thicknesses of the Honda bearings are probably best. I will be plastigage-ing the original...

thanks for the suggestions. i have never heard of ACL bearings. are they really better than the honda bearings? i'll look into them.

i am man enough to admit when i am wrong and this is one of those times. the harmonic balancer is important. isn't there a pulley that is available for purchase that does include the harmonic balancer but doesn't power anything except the alternator?

i read all those words on the last post, including the bulky quote. it said nothing. the honda ctr pulley was designed for a daily driver. the car is called a civic type-r. i guess the aftermarket companies always know better... :roll: :roll:

i am building a b16a and i need to replace the main bearings, rod bearings, and thrust washers. i know i can go to a dealer, but their prices are high, so does anyone know of anywhere else? thanks.

yeah civic type r crank pulley is alternator only. i see them for $64.99 on ebay every day. designed by honda.
