I have a 96 dx hb and i put in a d16y8 ex engine for now and i havent wired the knock sensor is it really nessesary ??? and it weird i have an intake and my friend 94 d16z6 coupe has the same just an intake and he smokes my by a whole car,.???? any ideas

does a knock sensor need to be ran to your ecu i put in a ex engine in to my dx hb for now and everything works but i still get smoked by a d16z6 and he has nothing but an intake.
