I bough this car about 7 months ago for 1000$ ( 65 Corvair V8 M/R) , it has a 350 with common bolt on and the stock trans, It drives and all that shit but the tranny insert shaft keeps braking cause the V8 is way to over powered. They say a 305 is the best with no major bolt on cause tranny issues. So i just gave up on it and let it sit, i dont want to make the car F/R so i was thinking, 3.8 National motor with low boost? My question is can i make this work, dose any one know any thing about this? thanks.

ya adapter plates i never trusted and finding the right size bolts may create a problem, gonna have to go with the 305, or a 301 i seen in that 80s trans am thread.
Or can convert the car to F/R and use a ford 9 rear fits up alight but thats last resort.

why not a 4.3l and boost that. All small block parts will work in a 4.3 and they are easy to find. and will bolt up you can also get carb intakes for them so you dont have to do the wiring for efi

The CORVAIR motor does look like an airplane motor!! Thats funny. stick with the V-8 route. Corvair stock motor broke down all day long!! GM's weak attempt at a "for the people" car!!! VW did a much better job. Someone told me that the corvair was one of the big enspirations for the camaro....But....yes...wrong forum lol

Sounds like you already got it sorted out, but +1 on the 4.3 swap. Theyre a dime a dozen, still mkae good power, but wont keep over powerin your tranny.

Before anyone else thinks they should point out that this is the wrong forum, read the third tab in the header of the page.

ya iam sure a good low end turbo on a 4.3 would give me plenty of power and a good weight ratio.. Never seen a 4.3 turbo corvair.. getting started on it some time next month. The car weighs around 2400 when iam done with it.

The resulting vehicle weighed only 2,750 pounds with the V8 ( 350) (1250 kg), compared to 3,700 pounds (1680 kg) (1966) for a small block Corvette, and possessed independent rear suspension of almost the same design. Crown's prototype with 350 hp (261 kW) Corvette engine recorded an elapsed time of 12.22 seconds and 105mph

I know this is a year old thread, but do you still have this car? I am interested in getting one for myself.

i think you are correct that the corvair was the inspiration for the camaro. i dont know how many people have seen my neighbors sittinin the yard in deconstrution for the last 4 years and have mistaken it for one sweet camaro gettin restored. i have to tell em to look again and that its a corvair. the body lines of the corvair do resemble 67-68 camaro lines. maybe even 69s too

yes the corvair was said by many groups to be one of the worst cars of all time. but few even know that the corvair was one of the first Yenko cars and that few were ever made...making a yenko corvair one of the sweetest rare cars to ever get for a yenko collector. but in my opinion, yenko or not, its still a corvair and on of the worst cars ever

Funny, my vote for worst car ever goes to Honda.

My Crown conversion with a 68 Camaro 302 (converted to roller) never breaks. The 302 keeps the torque off the bottom end, but revs over 9000rpm. Makes peak torque at around 5500rpm. It'll put the smack down on a lot of unsuspecting victims.
