Do any of you guys own or have owned a 92-96 Camry? If so, thoughts on these cars? I need a cheap, reliable DD that's not a thief magnet (i.e. not a modded Civic/Teg), and I found a 96 Camry 4 cylinder, 5 speed, and wondering about reliability. If anyone has any insights, let me know...

Buddy has an automatic. Never had any problems with it. Got a little over 180K I believe. I'd snag up a CB7 if it were me.

Those cars are solid as a rock. There are 2 in my extended family with well over 200k on the clock. I did a HG on one, but that's because the radiator failed and it was overheated. Other than the old 90's Lexus', I feel that the 90's Camry is one of the most reliable cars ever made. The only thing I hate about those cars is the steering feel and loads of body roll. A 5 speed is RARE in those too btw.

I looked at CB7s actually, but most of the ones around here are automatic, high mileage, and rotted to Hell, so I figured I'd branch out a bit. Looking at a 97 and 99 Accord too...

Cool, thanks! That's what I was hoping to hear. I figured they probably aren't the best handling cars, but I'd probably put Eibach springs and a TRD rear sway on it, and leave everything stock engine wise. My Integra's been broken into 3 times now, and the last time they actually attempted to steal the car. They jacked it up so bad that I had to replace the whole steering column. Love the car, but it's not worth all of this...

I knew a guy who had a 95 v6. Did the TRD stuff for the suspension. The car ran a low 15 pretty much stock.

the camry is... just plain awesome... perfect daily... the timing belt goes? (4 cyl) no prob. the engine is stone age non interfereance... just swap it out and go another 100k... the suspension and strut mounts go to shit? no prob, the still drives decent for the most part for some reason... need parts? junkyard... done! its like a civic, but with more room and its not as likely to get stolen or broken into!!!! all the popular swaps are available for it. rear disk brake conversion from the v6 model.... bigger front and rear brakes also from the v6 model... 3sgte turbo engine bolts right in... damn... now i want one again...lol

V6 Camry? I don't know the generations, but I had a 97 Avalon that had the same V6 as Camry's, and they're known for spinning bearings/oil sludge issues.

Yeah, probably. I mean, it's not that I dislike my Integra. But it's 14 years old and it's just an LS model, so it's not worth worrying about and dumping money into for repairs after people mess with it. When I have a garage at some point in the future then maybe I'll start a new Honda project, but for right now I'm at an apartment and I need a low key car that's reliable and won't get messed with.

Also looking at an 02 Accord now. My boss has a nice one that he wants to sell...

I grew up in the Troy/Rochester area, is it really getting that bad now?

Probably 5K max. I want to get something decent, but I can't really spend a lot right now...

Yeah, I dunno. I don't necessarily think it's any of my neighbors doing this. I mean, what are you going to do at an apartment complex if you steal your neighbor's car, right? I feel like it's probably someone that knows about Hondas and is cruising around casing cars. So if that's the case, they may not even be from Rochester.

All I know is that it's not just somebody wanting stereos, it's somebody that actually wants to steal the car. There's plenty of other nice cars parked where I live, and plenty of other cars with after-market head units and nobody else is getting messed with, so I think I just need to get out of the modded Honda scene at the moment. I've been out of it for a long time anyway really. The only thing I've done to my Integra over the past two years is wash it and change the oil...

my vote is on an early 2000 accord. it's a good model, within your budget, wont get messed with and still looks good.

Yeah, I'm kinda leaning towards an Accord as well. The Camry I was looking at is at a little dealership here, so I'm going to go check it out tomorrow. Here it is: Cars for Sale: 1996 Toyota Camry Sedan in Pontiac, MI 48342: Sedan Details - 287499738 - AutoTrader.com

I noticed that they also have this: Cars for Sale: 1999 Honda Accord LX Sedan in Pontiac, MI 48342: Sedan Details - 290027338 - AutoTrader.com

And this: Cars for Sale: 1997 Honda Accord LX Sedan in Pontiac, MI 48342: Sedan Details - 293183557 - AutoTrader.com

The 99 Accord looks cool because it's a 5-speed, and I'll at least take a look at the 97 because it's an EX (EDIT: Actually, I guess it's an LX, but it looks like it's got most of the EX's amenities like the sunroof and alloys), but I'd really prefer a manual transmission. The have some other Camrys too, but all of them are automatic. I know Accords are decent cars, so I could live with an automatic Accord. If I'm going to deviate away from Honda though, then I'd at least like it to be a stick shift. That's why that particular Camry caught my eye. It's definitely NOT a handsome car, but the more low key the better. I just need a reliable ride to work right now.

And then my boss has a 2002 black LX Accord 5-speed sedan that's in great shape, so I'm checking that out too. I really wish I could find a 98-02 Accord coupe because I've always thought they were great looking cars, but all the ones I can find are either 4 cylinder automatics or super high mileage...

I had a 2000 Accord Coupe and LOVED it. I vote for that one. :) My ex husband has it now and I regret all the time letting go of that car. They are very nice.

I do have a friend that drives a '96 Camry though- and has had it forever and a day- and it's still going strong. They are really good cars.

It's sad that you have to modify the type of vehicle you drive to keep it from getting stolen. :(

I have a friend that moved to Arizona and 5 days after he moved there his Integra was stolen. Less than 12 hours later they found the shell. Stupid car thieves.

Yeah, it really is, but like I said, I'm kind of over the whole modded Honda thing anyway, so I won't miss it too much. Just sucks that I have to throw down some cash...

I was looking into 98-02 accords 2 years ago. There are a few drawbacks if you get a dx or lx one. It has the non vtec, lower hp engine, steelies, rear drums, likely no ABS, and softer suspension tuning. Still a nice car, just felt like driving an econobox. The ex models feel much better IMO.
