I'm about to go to Vought to interview for a position as an apprentice aircraft mechanic! The first one went really well, so I think I've got it *knock on wood*. Sorry for not responding to my own threads, it's been crazy the passed few days.

Apply to Sik as well....they are in FL and are hiring like mad..... and they pay better than Vought.

The industry is hitting the rock bottom now for everything...but my job is picking up soo much, that they have to open another plant somewhere. Infact, our department in the commercial side is building so many, that now they think the Army can slip in the new Q's for us to build. (Q's are the new medivacs.) Plus yesterday, Saudi Araibia bought 50 more blackhawks...

I'll send my resume to them now even though people have been telling me to for a while now. Vought is expanding their facility as well, so I know they're not slowing down. Does Sik pay for your benefits and schooling? Also, do you by chance know what they would start someone with no experience in the field at?

Out in the field, the ranks go from 4(bitch) to 6(Can work on shit, but someone still has to inspect it) to 7(You fix and inspect) to 8(You do the important shit). At least that's now he explained it to me. I asked him how I could speed up the process if I were to be hired and he said nothing. He told me they require a minimum of 3-5 years experience to go from rank 4 to 6 no matter what. Besides, I'll be working first shift and they will pay for my schooling, so why not make money and just take my time with school? I figure I'll take 2 or so classes at a time and get my AA in 4 years because I'm a slacker. There's an awesome community college between the plant and house that I've taken 7 or so classes at already, so that works out well.

I can think of way cooler ways to get a gut instead of getting drunk all the time. Thanks.

Vought was building our blackhawk shells, but messing them up too much, they might have gotten better and are still doing them, I haven't kept up with the shop shit for a while. one shell was so screwed up, it turned into a carcus for the new employee's to practice on.

As for sik...everything is paid and covered. I've said it 100 times, maybe 120 times...but free college, 50% matched 401K up to a limit of $120 a week...a free $60 is fun. Medical is top rate...I pay for me and the wife $27 a week, and we're fully covered. Metlife group discount, Dell discounts, discounts for Jeep, GMC, Chevy and other crappy cars. Basically...if you get the job, hold it for 90 days, and don't take anything home or hit someone...show up on time, and don't sleep on the job...then your pretty much safe for a 30+ year career. Low pay in the beginning, but it jumps up. I started at $19 an hour, and now I'm at $30.05 in less than 7 years....with close to 40K's in the 401K...it should have been in the $45K's area but the economy killed any gains this year.

You would prolly start as a 8 or a 7, make about $22 an hour, and if your good, you advance. I'm a 2....and when the boss gets off his ass and recommends me for crew chief then I'll be a 0. $36 an hour. And this last thursday, I hit $67Ks for this year. Next week will be $69K's, and so forth. I'll be happy to finally hit the 6 figure income this year while only working 6.5 hours a day.

Ahh, thats right, Poland is now doing the shells. I might have to go back on the road to help them get up to speed next year....I can't wait. 3-6 months in poland will be cool.

Whoa, I completely missed this post. I appreciate all the info and I'm very excited to be working in the aircraft industry, but there's one thing I don't understand. How in hell would I get an entry level position making $22 an hour with no degree besides HS and zero experience working with aircraft?

Well, I guess Airjockie wouldn't be proud, but I got the job! Piss test Tues. and I start on Sept. 8. Huh, I just checked the calendar and realized I turn 20 on Labor Day and then start what I plan on being my career a week after. Kind of ironic. Pay isn't amazing, but it is supposed to increase pretty rapidly. I already have my foot in the door thanks to a good friend's father. Not that I plan on using anything but good work habits to prove myself, but it's always nice to know someone. The guy who offered me the job said it starts at $10 an hour then goes to $11 an hour after 90 work days. An evaluation/pay increased is supposed to follow every 90 work days. I think evaluations are great ideas because they give you something to work for and look forward to. Helps you feel like you're not just a set of arms and legs to them(which is probably exactly why they do it lol).
