AVG Free - Download Free Antivirus and Antispyware for Windows 7, Vista and XP

i use ESET NOD antivirus on my laptop, since it was a free year subscription from zones. i like it better than AVG in the fact that it uses much less system resources and it will prompt for action instead of just randomly pegging files for quarantine or deletion.

free = microsoft security essentials, AntiVir or Avast. imo, free avg has become bloated and scanning heuristics arent as good as other programs.

if you're feeling technical and want to read up on vbulletin, scanning results, etc... here is a very very good resource:

    EliteKiller.com - are you Elite?

I like Avast. I've used AVG before, works fine but seems like Avast is better at catching things faster.

    yep

    all free versions...
AVG runs all the time and does automatic updates and scans nightly
the TeaTimer feature is always running and alerts me to anything that tries to do any weird shit
i update and run Spybot's Scan and the "Immunize" feature about once a week
i update and run an MBAM scan about once a week
(they each get stuff that the other doesnt... and i dont get any noticeable performance hit with them so i keep them)

usually nothing is found on any of my scans
usually TeaTimer doesnt start freaking out
but on the occasion that something does happen to get on my computer, i am alerted early and am able to cut my internet connection... and run a scan with definitions that are at worst a week old

i also have a few other things that i keep available on a dedicated clean up thumbdrive like this little program called rKill

and a few randomly named MBAM executable files for those times that the malware in question is blocking MBAM from running its usual .exe
