anybody know how to flash a BIOS?

My desktop that i recently put together is pretty old, from around '02, and i am wanting to dual boot XP and Ubuntu on it. I already have XP on it, and the other day i installed Ubuntu, but when i go to reboot it, it won't start. the error code is gives says that the bios is too old. I have looked around online, but i'm not sure about which bios to go with. I sent through esupport.com and they told me they have the exact thing i need, but it was $49.99 and i don't want to pay if i can find the right one online for free.

if anyone knows how to find the right one, i can put up the bios string and other info thats needed
 
find out your motherboard manufacturer and they should have updated bios flashes and instructions.
 
there's like 10 different ones that are under my motherboards name, so i'm not sure which one to go with. I think i found the right one, but i don't want to mess up and have the mb be useless.
