    do you have underground utilities? its proba an access port for cable, power, gas, etc.

    My guess is a french drain or dry well. Any pipes running into it?

    There are couple above ground cable/ electric boxes next to it in the neighbors yard.. dont think they are to that.. havent seen anyone mess with it in the 5yrs I've lived here... hell, its been buried under leaves for the past 2yrs

    probably for drainage of some sort. contact your town/utility people. you might not be allowed to fuck with it.

    I plan on it... just wanted to figure out what its called so i dont sound like a retard on the phone... what i'd like to do is cover it with dirt and plant grass over it so levels my yard right there.. a pain in the ass to mow because of the divot it makes in the ground

    do you see any pipes feeding into or out of it below grade?
    i would have to go with drainage, but you can always pull the grate off and get yourself a ladder to investigate

    wouldnt need a ladder.. its not that deep.. corvette, u cant see the pic in the OP? its a metal grate, similar to what you posted .. covering what looks like a box placed in the ground.. its covered in leaf mulch so its hard to tell whats under it
