That is a halfshaft, all the DOHC blocks use them D, H and B. And yes it goes from teh driver side of the tranny to the driverside axle, and bolts to the back of the block.

The main purpose of the intermediate shaft is to reduce the torsional twist of the driver's axle reducing torque steer that most fwd transaxles are know for due to different axle lengths.
