B16a Knock sensor

Can any one tell me why a knok sensor goes bad or makes the light come on is it just a matter of age or repeted bad gas?

a knock sensor detects engine knock (i.e. detonation, or some other cause of abnormal vibrations in the block. when knock is detected the ecu will retard the timing hence a loss in power
