On a blown turbo'd engine, would the whole turbo "system" be salvagable from the engine bay?

    most likely.
if its the motor that blew up, chances are the turbo is still ok.
check for shaft play in the turbo, as well as try to figure out what caused the blowing- a boost spike? bad waste gate? line blew off? etc

well if the motor was blown due to a spun bearing ( when the motor isnt getting enuff oil) then i would say that the turbo is shot also. (turbos need oil to live dont forget this.)

you can have enough oil and still spin a rod bearing from abuse. It would be useful to check though. just have to go look for yourself what happened
