buying an engine...how do you know if it's stolen?

i wanted to find out how you can tell if an engine you're buying is stolen or not.
which number on the engine do you check? is it the 7 digit number under the engine code? does carfax provide that type of service?

run the vin through car fax. all 94+ motors have a vin plate on them, as do most trannys.

nope, it will have a plaque on it...

ignore my tuirbo return line, but therer is my vin plaque right on the front bottom of the motor, 100% legit.
