The straps are supposedly saftey straps to hold the car after he made it up the hill. I guess it's a little more believable since it had the studded snow tires.

They have the same effectiveness as Subaru or DSMs AWD, (DSM and Subaru have neater options with either their optional LSDs or the STi's biaser) making them a bit more superior. But I would lean to whichever setup didn't make the car dive to 19 mpg.

If snow is the real issue, then I think that Part-time 4WD is best route to go. I do know, for a fact, that my Subaru could not do that incline (The Loyale, that is)
