Car wont idle in reverse

This one is gettig on my nerves, I have a b16a in my 89 rex and unless I give it some throttle my car will just die in reverse (yes even with the clutch still held in) the check engine light comes on everytime and I dont eve know where to begin.

sounds like a trans or clutch problem. With the clutch disengaged it should idle normally no matter where the gear selector is.
