Damn... so that's what all them nerds have been up to in SC... I immediately knew they would drop it all on top on a linux kernel though... I'm anxious to see how this all pans out.

what the hell is there to be impressed or not impressed about
its text on a page at this point

One of the big issues I see with Google's play for an OS is guranteed they are going to make it 100% cloud computing. So no connection, no documents. I for one do not spend an extra 60 a month for an AirCard. And I have very serious doubts that Google can sell fortune 500 companies and the feds that their solution is better than Microsofts. Not everyone wants all their stuff 'in the clouds'.

netbooks and notebooks are coming with aircard services built in now. by the time this is released i dont think it will be much of an issue. most IT people are also required to carry them nowadays too.

Including the hardware is a step in the right direction but until the cost comes down to 15 or so bucks and they get rid of the retartededly stupid 5 gig caps then I wont be using it. Oh wait, they keep telling us WiMax is right around the corner! :)

about 5yrs ago I speculated that google was creating an OS. A good friend of mine and my bosses son were both hired by google a few years ago right out of college. The reason they were hired their expertise with GNU/liunx and security. I'm excited I can't wait to give another linux distro a go.

^ lol agreed. Who told google there was openings in the OS market anyway?

The opening is Acer being able to sell a netbook for 150 bucks because they dont have to pay the Windows tax. On top of that, if Google integrates AdSense into the OS/Browser itself in an unobtrusive way then they start cutting Acer, Dell, HP whoever it is in on the ad revenue generated by AdSense. If you where a hardware manufacture and you make 50 bucks off of each unit its a good day. Now you add onto the fact that Google will pay them 25 bucks a year for each Chrome powered netbook they sell (that remains active) you are rolling in the cash. But this is where I take issue. Google makes money on Ads plain and simple. YouTube does not generate revenu, nor does Picasa. Or any of the other eleventy billion products they have. They provide well rounded solid solutions for free so they can sell ads. Now Google handels ad's better than everyone no doubt about that but they do not need to plaster flashy ads because they data mine like a son of a bitch. And there is no doubt in my mind that Chrome OS will be the golden goose. Sooner rather than later Google is going to be looked at like Microsoft.

Do you honestly believe that another OS could make its way through the giants that easily? Truth is most people shouldn't give a crap what OS is running their computer, but they do. If I had a dime for every customer that walked into Best Buy saying "I don't want the Vista" I would be swimming in money. Yet they don't give a crap what OS is on their phone, just like they don't care what type of engine is in their car so long as it works.

All I'm saying is, there's something about computers that terrifies most people. This makes them cautious as to what they have running in them, and in all honesty google simply doesn't have the degree of credibility to make people go "Oh, an OS by google? This must be good!"

Sure more computer savvy people won't look at things this way, but the market you are talking about is riddled with that type of customer.

Google will have the price point going for it and what does the fat middle do on a computer? Check email, look at cats playing piano on YouTube, social networking and a ton of porn thrown into the mix. So here is Google offering a way for manufactures to sell laptops dirt cheap with the tag line of booting instantly. It has the chance to make some serious headway. Because if it is point and click easy and gets them to their content right quick as well as cheap, well then what would you choose? Google is a huge name, they are up there with Microsoft and Apple. How many times a day do you hear someone say 'just Google it'?

I never said google wasn't a big name, shit it's THE world's search engine. What I'm saying is they are known for their helpful search crap, not for making good OS or even browsers for that matter... I agree with you that they have a chance to make some headway if they go the route you are mentioning, and they make a very solid quality OS. Why? Cause from experience word trickles down from the educated to the ignorant (by no means do I intend to offend anyone, but if you don't know about something you are ignorant by definition) and if they make a mediocre/shit OS the "fat middle" will hear about it. Then I'll be hearing "I don't want the google." instead of "I don't want the vista." Specially since W7 is making a big hit, and should carry a nice comeback for Microsoft - even in the netbook isle.
