Just bought a 94 civic lx with 168k on it for my daily driver. It ran fine for about a week until it started to overheat.I replaced the thermostat, new coolant and made sure the fan was working. The water pump was replaced before I bought the car. What the hell could it be?

Well, check the radiator cap..may not be pressurizing the system. Also check for clogged radiator and/or heater core, if it is warm all around then you find a cool spot then it's clogged. Another possibilty could be a bad thermostat or one opening at the wrong temp.
