What mode are you shooting in? This picture would be great with some depth of field. Lower your aperture if you're shooting in Av or M, to at least 5.6. If you focused on the car in the foreground, the car in the background would be nicely out of focus and would have made this picture really glow. Your composition is getting better and it will as long as you keep practicing. I've snapped probably close to 100,000 images, and probably "like" about 100-150. Practice practice practice.

I have my first wedding coming up this weekend. I'm not into weddings but hell, its extra rainy day money and again, helps me practice. Luckily this is a very relaxed backyard jobber so I don't have to worry too much about lighting conditions.

appreciate the tip. shooting in m now and idk what aperture is on lol. didnt really think about it when i was taking it lol. will try the pic again this weekend with your tip

try shooting between f9 and 11. from all of the reading i have done, most every lens (that we can afford) will be at its best between those stops.

Just picked up an old OM mount Olympus film lens for my DSLR... Zuiko 50mm 1.8f .. $40.. its all manual since im gonna use a non-chipped adapter.. excited to see how it shoots

just got my lens in the mail today.. its nothing super special, but i can get much better shots in bad lighting with it.. one shot i got so far, using natural light coming in from the sliding glass door
Dre Dogg loves being the subject

Last two pics need to be shot in different light.

Use a powerful fill flash to overcome the shadows.

or shoot them before the sun gets behind the trees, or wait until it gets behind the trees fully.

or, take advantage of RAW photos and up the fill and recovery to eliminate some of the darkness of the shadows

Even if he does that, he'll still have photos with Dalmatian spots.
