it's surprisingly close to concept. 99% of the time, companies put out a decent concept then totally rape the final product.

    not bad honda, not bad.

dude, you need a license to buy a new car. they write down your license number on the registration form at the dealership :D GET YOUR LICENSE ALREADY!

the smart car actually meets and excesses all US crash test safety standards.

i think he was getting at the point that the smart car meets and exceeds crash test standards all while not being the size of a bus and weighing just over 1800lbs

while all of these other cars just seem to be getting larger and more bloated with every new model release

The smart car has a tiny, tiny foot print, much smaller than a crz. The crz exterior wise is between a 1st gen insight and the ep3 hatch. The smart also isn't a hybrid, so the IMA and batteries don't weigh it down. Because the thing is so damn small, it's basically a ball of steel. A car is like a bridge. The further the trusses are apart, the stronger each has to be. Same with a car. The bigger the car dimension wise, the more sheets of sheet metal you need in critical areas.

Really though, the Smart doesn't impress me that much. Curb weight on those is around 1700. Considering what you give up, I'd never consider one.

Cars WILL be getting smaller. Trust me on that. The easiest way to improve mileage is to reduce weight. While cars these days look huge and bloated, we're much more efficient with materials than we ever were. Things like all glass roofs and 8 airbags in a car cancel the savings. It's unbelievable how much bracing goes behind each air bad nowadays. I think what amazes me the most is seats. The average seat weighs 80-90 lb. The new active head restraints require massive springs in the seats (heavy), and actuators. The side air bags in them have tons of extra bracing around them. Throw on the power mechanism and it really adds up.

The entire rear bench in my 78 civic weighs maybe 5 lbs. It's made of foam and vinyl and sits directly on the unibody sheetmetal.

On the seat topic, the seats in my Fit really blow, and I want to get rid of them asap. Unfortunately that'll be about 1k, only to remove airbags, and possibly make my car more unsafe.

I've got a 32" waist, and they offer me no support at all. I slide around in them, and can't ever seem to get comfortable. The side bolstering was designed for someone of a 46" waist, and the kidney supports the same. The seats were just designed for huge fucking people, not for me.

And I understand designing the seats to fit the market. But still, they're uncomfortable to me. I loved the seats in my EJ hatch.
