Make sure the snap ring on the end is in place and not bent or damaged. Put it in the trans, make sure the splines are lined up, and cram it in there. You just have to muscle it in. If you can't, get a dead blow hammer and bump it into place.
well make sure first you are not trying to use the passenger side axle on the driver side. the driver side axle has splines up the entire shaft that goes into the intermediate shaft. whereas the passenger side axle only has them about half way of the shaft.
