d15b vtec smoking at high rpms

hey all one of my frnds has a d15b 92ferio that just started smoking suddenly
the car was smoke free from idle to revlimit and suddenly the previous day it started
the car smokes like hell when the distributor is advanced and when its retarded its smokes a little
the oil is 2/4 and has turned black could that be the problem?
and its smoking on like after 5.5krpm and missing too
the valve cover is leaky all over from the vtec solenoid to the valve cover bolts!
i know blue smoke means bad rings - but suddenly? are there any other possibilities?
what oil should i use? 10w20?
compression test? what should be the best value(in psi) for a healthy d15b thankhs

Should be around 160-180 PSI I'd think.
As long as the cylinder pressures are within 10-15 PSI of each other you should be OK.
