I have an old old Dell from like 2002, so I can't recall what the specs are on it, but it should work... right?

a machine from 2002 might not be sata, (check your board if it has the right plugs)
and it might not support 1tb either.

bsod doesn't necessarily mean you need a new hard drive. download antimalware bytes, restart your computer in safe mode, run amwb. you may be able to clean it up. even if you have to do a drive reinstall, you can save some cash.

No, it's been getting kernel instack page errors for about a year now. Looking it up that code apparently means the harddrive is failing, if i recall correctly. But yeah, I need a better antispyware. Porn sites love my computer a bit too much.

Decided I'm going to just buy a new desktop. Was told to stay away from cellaron (however it's spelt), and to get a Pentium or AMD. Preliminarily looking through newegg, there's a few choices. I like to play video games and surf the internet on it. Give me some advice.

id wait til the end of the month or so because AMD bulldozer is coming out and hopefull start a pricewar

if you cant, id look into Intel Core i3/i5 or AMD Fusion A8 or Phenom II X4. intel pentium, celeron or amd sempron's are really anemic.

whats the budget and intended usage?

Not sure of the budget at this point, just dropped 400 on new tires... so it'll be a few until I can really figure out a number. I will mostly play games with it, minecraft, C&C Generals, Sim City, etc... along with varied internet usage for websites and pron.

if you're comfortable with a screw driver and can get a hold of windows, this is a pretty good deal.

there isnt a dvdburner, but those are $20 bucks. the power supply will work, but i would eventually replace it with an 80% efficiency one that will last longer too (about $20).

more games are taking advantage of more cores and pretty much any game released in 2011 will load at least 4 cores. lastly, you can overclock it to at least 3.0ghz, if you get adventurous.

ps oh yeah i forgot, if a program doesnt use all cores with temperatures permitting, amd turbo will turn off 3 of the cores and ramp up the speed to 3.1ghz.
