L3? wat the fuck does that mean, theres a code stamped somewhere but I don't know where its at. i dont think 5 speed trannys had codes like that, but I'm not sure someone here will though.

L3 means manual tranny. I think that all of the ef manual trannys have l3 on them. The si does have l3 on it but it has a different carrier bearing marker on it. I can get pics of it if I remember.

Ok went out to the garage and looked again.

    It has:

    pl3 9000

    l3 2585690

    on it as well.

Is there a place a should be looking on the tranny that would tell me what it is? -crombie09

all 88-91 Civic, CRX and ZC transmissions (4spd & 5spd) are L3 models - PL3/9000 is more than likely a Si, but not definitely - the PL3/9000, PL3/3000, etc. are casting numbers for the back half of the case and can be used to determine whether the transmission has the large or small bearings (PL3/A000 have small bearings) but do not indicate the gearing - for instance, I have a ZC that is PL3/9000, did have a 91 DX that was PL3/3000 and had a 88 Si that was PL3/A000 - the only way to know for sure is to check the gear ratios

Damn good info bro! The only way to check out the gear ratios is to put the trans in the car, right? -crombie09

don't have to put it in the car - shift the transmission into reverse - rotate the input shaft and count the number of turns the input shaft makes to turn the differential one complete turn - 9.3 turns=HF: 12.25 turns=DX: 13.4 turns=Si
