If you have seen the movie "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead", it's hard to ignore the value of juicing and a clean diet. With that said, I just invested in a Vitamix blender. As of now, the plan is to do all of August on a clean diet. When I can't blend, I'll eat a vegetarian meal or something with a little chicken. If everything goes well and I feel good about the results, i'll probably stick with 1-2 smoothies a day and a reasonable meal for dinner.

Motivation: I'm sick of feeling fat, lethargic, and generally out of shape. For being a month away from 35, I think i'm doing pretty well if I was compared to my peers. But I want to get back into shape for BJJ competitions and improve my overall health. I have started my internship and my choice to work a ton of hours has really impacted my energy and my diet. Hopefully this can help.

The plan: 30 days of smoothies. No booze. No fast food. I'll exercise 3-4 times a week doing weightlifting and cardio.

The goal: Look and feel awesome for my 35th birthday. I'm going to Belgium and then Ireland for a wedding on from August 28th-September 7th. I hope to lose 10 pounds by then, if not 12-15.

    Here is what I purchased:

    https://www.vitamix.com/Shop/Certif...CFKH7EOuNt2KK4fKS3FAMaAhfE8P8HAQ&gclsrc=aw.ds

Video that helped me finalize my purchase:

I'll update this thread and possibly start a blog of some sort.

Edit: I want to emphasize smoothies and NOT juicing.

I'm against the juice diet as the sole means of calories. As a single meal replacement, sure. I'm not a doctor but it's the same reason why vegetarians have a hard time going back to eating meat again-- their stomach's can't handle the processing of the proteins any more and lack the proper digestive bacteria. If you juice for a month, not only will you have liquid poo (think- baby diaper) but going back to solid foods may prove difficult for you afterwards.

There's better ways to 'eat better'.

Frankly, juice is all sugar in the first place. If you want to cut some pounds, injecting vitamin A, C and glucose is not the way to do it.

That's a legit blender right there. My wife and I do smoothies every morning and bought a Ninja BL770 from Bed Bath. I think we ended up paying like $150 after coupons and sales We just couldn't justify spending that much on a Vitamix but they are definitely worth the money.

We usually do Muscle Milk powder, non fat Greek yogurt, PB Fit peanut butter powder, unsweetened Almond milk and a banana. Absolutely delicious.

I have been slacking myself in my works outs. Pretty disappointed in my self need to get back track..this post just motivated me.

The smoothie is different than juicing. I'll be eating whole vegetables and not just the juice. I should have clarified. But you are right, juice only is bad. But for my diet, I'll supplement protein with yogurt, protein powder, and other forms of protein. I'll be lifting weights, so i'll want to keep my muscle mass.

Good luck man! I have watched the documentary and it does really sell the whole juicing thing ha ha. I though really serious about giving it a go as well but decided for the time being it would be easier to just eat less shitty foods rather than go from eating trash to just juicing. Let us know how it goes though! I would be interested in seeing what kinda routine you are doing at the gym while juicing and if your juice numbers are lower than your non juicing numbers.

My wife has wanted one of those for a while, they are bad ass blenders.

I'm not into the Juicing diet.

My diet is stay away from carbs, don't anything "processed" and stay away from non natural sugars. I've basically stuck to the Paleo diet loosely. When I did the paleo diet like a religion for 30 days I lost 25lbs (from 225 to 200) and brought my cholesterol back to normal (mine was pretty high and statins did not help, I stopped the statins before trying this diet).

Basically if it wasn't "alive" at one point, don't eat it. lol

I still do fast food once in a while along with drinking beer (my weakness). Beer is a real killer though, stick to distilled alcohols like scotch. :)

my mother in law bought us a vitamix. that thing is a fucking beast. only issue it has is with cooked potatoes (we frequently make a vegan nacho cheese dip that is fucking awesome uses a lot of potatoes).

we tried juicing a number of years back for about a week, but there is just too much waste to justify it. you loose too much of the good stuff just to end up with juice and a major fucking mess.

I wouldnt worry about sticking to mainly smoothies though, just eat the veggies when you feel hungry.

    good luck.

i'm not too worried about hunger. I've read that 32 ounce smoothies are great and adding the protein should help quite a bit.

yeah, they def are. but, i know that my wife still gets pretty hungry after drinking her massive ass smoothies in the morning. her smoothies fill up the vitamix pitcher which i think is 72 ounces. shes pretty hungry by lunch, if not sooner. the fruits and veggies just seem to digest quicker, even with her added protein powder. So, just expect to be needing a bit more. We have a friend that constantly tries to do this kind of stuff and she always gives in after a couple of days bc she was just too hungry. problem is that shes still trying to eat the same portion sizes and frequency that she does with regular non-healthy eating (shes not fat, just wants to be in better shape and whatnot). We keep telling her that she needs to up the portions and number of meals or snacks as well. she doesnt, so she ends up constantly being hungry.

been doing green smoothies for breakfast every day for a few years now
    i love them
they are quick and easy, taste good, and keep me full til lunch
    usually end up being 20-25oz

researched the shit out of blenders a few years back (after damn near killing a conventional blender)
got down to the Vitamix and the Blendtec
both are amazing machines and should last a very long time with heavy use
in the end i chose the Blendtec for its more powerful motor, better jar/blade design, and available accessories (the twister jar is the shit for making nut butters)
the Vitamix is significantly quieter though, and does better at food processor-ish jobs (salsa and whatnot) due to being able to spin much lower rpm

load that fucker up with shit tons of leafy greens and other fruits/vegies and blend away

The blendtec is louder than the vitamix? Holy fuck. That thing must sound like a damn volcano going off bc the vitamix is loud as fuck.

Dam I'm not sure when you people are drinking your smoothies but how are they filling you up until lunch? I drink mine around 6:30-7am and I'm hungry around 10am. I usually tough it out until lunch or eat a granola bar to hold me over until lunch.

    My smoothies consist of:
1 Cup non Fat Greek yogurt 130 calories 23grams protein
1 scoop Muscle Milk chocolate Protein powder 150 calories 16grams protein
2tbsp of PB Fit powder 45 calories and 5grams of protein
1 Cup Almond Milk 30 calories and 1 gram of protein
1 Banana 105 calories 1 gram of protein

That's 460 calories and 46 grams of protein lasting me about 3 hours and I sit on my ass all day lol.

Probably has to do with quantity. You don't have enough mass in there. Throw some extra veggies in there and some juice. Bulk it up a little. Fill it up with shit like spinach and other greens.

I compared both and watch a bunch of shit on youtube. It was a tossup until I had a friend from BJJ tell me he bought the Vitamix after the Blendtec and he prefers it. In the end, the extra cash wasn't a big deal. Amortize $50-$100 more over 5-7 years and it's what, $.15 smoothie. (10 smoothies a month for 5 years. ymmv)

The trick to staying full for me--
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=09YG3V6ZBPZN7KFRQJPS

I put about a tbsp in with my protein shake (which is usually a combo of 15-20g protein powder, flax, and some 'super greens' in unflavored almond milk ) it's a little gritty, but it works mint. good omega 3's, high soleable fiber, not gassy or bloaty. The greens are a quick easy way for my late non-morning ass to get some nutrients in me before leaving.
