i haven't been able to stop wondering lately how many CRXs are still 'out there' and i've gone as far as to try lots of google searches using words like 'statistics' and 'registered cars' and the obligatory make/model stuff, but i haven't gotten anywhere.

am i the only one that sits around wondering how many <fill in the blank> cars are left?

the closest reference i've gotten was actually an article about the most stolen car of 'x' year and referenced CCC Information Services Inc. and the article said something about CCC taking the total number of registered vehicles in the US and then blahbiddyblah, so i went to their site thinking 'yeah i can find some statistics stuff here' - but no...

even the used car searches only let you search cars that are a) listed for sale and b) within a certain zip or distance range.

so my question for you guys: anyone ever heard of a way to figure out how many of a particular make/model car are still registered or operating in the US? i just want a good anonymous estimate - i don't need to know where the cars are or who owns 'em or anything.

like, how many did honda make, how many of them made it to the US, and how many of those haven't been scrapped?

anyone with anything remotely on-topic to share, i'm all ears.

i'm a kinda pointless person ;). no seriously, i just like the idea of knowing...kinda like who cares about baseball statistics? apparently a lot of people because there's every stat you could ever conceive of.. so why can't there be the same kinda thing but for cars?

anyway my perfect (besides paint) '89 got mashed last month and i picked up a replacement pretty easy; but i kinda have this 'i want this kind and that one and one of those' mentalities. i can't have the lotus esprit i want, or the 300ZX i want, or the vint. 'stang i want, or even the sooby baja i want - but i can afford the rex. and it makes me wonder how many do i theoretically have to choose from? :D

oh yah - and passing a barely-there-it-was-so-rusted-out hf on my way to work today mighta brought the curiosity out enough to actually post about it. rock that the guy could still get that thing to hold together down the highway, and we waved at each other as i passed his laggin' ass too. but it got me wondering for the nth time, how many of us are there?

i can tell you there are toooooo many neons on the road - sheesh. see those allllll the time. but hell i'd do a statistics search on them too just because i could (if i could). so can i? :)

Actually you're not the only one. If you head onto HT there's a new car stolen every week, stripped and recovered as a shell with one pane of glass left in it.

Like 99-00 Civic Si's, they only built them for two years, how many are left after all the theft/strips, accidents, repo's/crushings, etc.

There are plenty of clean(stock) CRX's around here. I saw one girl earlier this week with a clean non-Si(probably DX) and there's some girl that works at this nail salon next to the Papa Johns I go to that has a white CRX.

You also gotta count how many are resurrected from the dead.

I see DAs around all the time, sadly, they're just all riced out, or crashed, or mismatched in color due to parts being replaced. DB2s are the 'rare' ones... but still... I don't wake up wondering... I do from time to time think 'one day, this car will be antique'

Jesus dude, it's a 91. It's still new in the Great Book of Celerity.

I'm currently working out a thing to get another 86 CRX so I can lovingly strip it for parts and store those parts. Stuff is getting harder for that gen to find.

But they are stilll around. Try finding a 1982 200SX . You can't.

yeah my question wasn't so much about a specific car (though CRX was my example as it's my fave). it was - IS there a way to do this kind of statistics research, for any make/model, and if so - tell me where/how, so i can get my pointless game on :). the example of the 1982 200SX is a perfect one - don't you wish you could find out how many of them there really are in existence? i mean c'mon we know how many spotted geckos there are on prince hairball island, or how many times an outfielder scratches nut in the 6th inning - why not be able to know some info about car counts. it's trivial, but trivia. and entertaining, at least to me... well anyway...

    thanks for everyone's feedback.

    yeah, das'rite.

I've had some nice NXs. Still out there.

In fact, ChrisM has mine now.

Cars are a dirty hobby. Unless you're a car guy. People can accept cars being a hobby if they are truly remarkable. "I collect pre-war Rolls Royces" is far more acceptable than "I collect 80's Japanese cars".

    Trust me on this.

huh..well i ain't out to be accepted. i trust you tho. i'm just a weirdo. i collect rolling stone covers (but only cool ones). oh yeah and song covers...i have 7 versions of 'little wing' (SRV's being my personal fave, Sting's being teh worst) and three versions of 'solitary man.' i bet that's enough to ensure my entrance to dorkville.

I actually enjoy seeing the cars I collected as matchbox toys. I go 'I had that one!' I dunno... I have over 5000 Matchbox cars.
