What's the easiest and fastest way to remove the driveshaft on a 91 dx? Is my only choice to pop the lower balljoint? Thanks

Thats the way I know how. Use a jack to hold the rotor in the air while you hammer on the lower arm....if that don't work....use a pry bar or pry fork

you have to pop the lower ball joint from the knuckle in order to separate the knuckle/hub from the axle - remove cotter pin and castle nut from ball joint - take a 4-5 lb hammer and strike the side of the knuckle, where the ball joint goes thru, several times as hard as you can and it will just pop right out (see picture below)

if you are removing the entire axle, you will also need to remove the strut fork from the strut and the lower control arm - remove the pinch bolt holding the fork to the strut - remove the bolt holding the fork to the control arm and pull the fork out - if you are just popping the axle out like to remove the transmission, you don't need to remove the fork - just pop the axle out of the transmission with a pry bar and slide it back out of the way

you certainly have more room to get the axles out by popping the lbj, but i find that it's generally a pretty big pain in the dick to get the joint seperated from the lca. and if you want to reuse said balljoint don't get slaphappy with a pickle fork lol.

for this reason whenever removing axles i just pop the uca balljoint. it takes all of 5 seconds to do with a regular ole 2lb hammer.

There IS another way- I always remove the INNER lower control arm bolt and just swivel the whole control arm assembly out of the way. You can usually swing everything out enough to get the axle out without popping the ball joint loose. I changed quite a few axles this way.

you know, i have considered doing it like that but have not yet had a chance to try it and see if it would work. since you say it will in fact work, i certainly might try it that way next time i need to pull an axle lol.

how do you move the lower control arm far enough to get the axle out without unbolting the radius rod and the sway bar?

Muscle? Or just unbolt the radius rod? It's not that hard- and way easier than popping out a stuck ball joint.
