DVD burning software

Okay, I'm looking for a copy of that DVD ripping software that rips DVD's from the disk to a hard disk. I heard they pulled that software off the shelf back in the day to prevent dvds from getting on the net, but I am getting a large external hard drive I want to DL my parents library onto, and I need some software for it. I think it was some version of divx that isn't available anymore. Does anyone have it? I'm sure someone does. Thanks for any info. peace
