I find it interesting that the gov't continually mandates that the fuel economy standards increase while at the same time pushing fuels that decrease mpg by 10-15%.

They don't care about mpg. They care about emissions.

This has been in place since 1975. I believe the standard is 27 mpg for 2011, excluding vehicles over 10000 lbs gvw.

Actually I don't think they care about fuel economy or emissions, other than it allows them to enforce more rules and regulations and pass more legislation.

Funny that it requires more oil to produce a gallon of corn ethanol blended gasoline than a gallon of ethanol blended gasoline itself. Why not use sugar cane as the source?

OH, that's right, it doesn't drive up the cost of food, thus making the farmers happy. America was built on farmers and religious zealots.
