Linh has a 2007 Civic SI and from day one (bought it used at around 12K miles) the car had issues going into 3rd gear, doesn't grind, but it just takes a firm push, if you don't push hard enough it wont go in, its just now getting worse where it's annoying. We're just now getting around to calling the dealership to get it looked at. Linh called yesterday to Honda of Tysons (NVA) told them the car has about 37-38K miles on it and told them the problem.

Over the phone they told her, without looking at the car or knowing anything other then its hard to get into 3rd gear, that will be around $2200 to fix. She asked if it was under warranty they said, no the warranty is only for 36K miles. She sent me a message telling me the details of what they said, I told her don't worry about it I'll take care of it later.

I call up the local Honda dealership to us and ask the same question. Told him it's hard going into 3rd gear, thankfully, maybe since I'm a guy, He told me they would have to look into it and couldn't say much over the phone. I asked if it was covered under warranty, he said if the cars got 37-38K miles on it, then no. I then asked him why the powertrain warranty was though of as the bumper to bumper limited warranty he then said, well, we can try to call honda of America to see if they'd approve of the work. I then asked isn't the limited power train warranty that covers the engine, transmission and drive train a 60K mile warranty, he then said yes. Oh, so then is it covered? He said it should be.

You get the full warranty honda offers from the factory on any car used or new.
This goes for any car, if they warranty something for 36K 50K 80K 100K miles you need to warranty it.

Extended warranties are a bit different, sometimes they follow the cars sometimes they follow the owners. If the later, then you need to transfer the warranty to the new owner.

this is why dealership repairs and services shouldn't be commissioned sales. they fuck over the unknowing buyer.

buy being married to you, linh just saved $3000. lol

most warranties are fully transferable (you have to ask to be 100% positive)

the only brand i have seen that isnt transferable at all is kia.
10/year 100k mile warranty, only for the original buyer.

if they try to say that its not under warranty, ask to speak to their regional director. just keep complaining and going up the ladder, it will get covered.

Trust me I'm not worried about it. I know how to get stuff done. Just like I told the guy on the phone. He just needed it pointed out.

Turns out 3rd gear is a major issue causing problems for more then just the SI.

3rd gear is a major problem with all the civics. some dealerships don't want to fix them.

actually, i think "gomezkun" on here had the same issue with his EX.

Sucks to hear you have the 3rd gear issue. Is it only doing it when the car is cold? I know on my 5 speed maxima, the transmission feels like garbage until I've driven it a bit.

I hate my Si's tranny when its cold. Sometimes I have to try at least 10 times to get it in reverse. No grinds, it just wont go in. I heard its common though.

Do you put it in 5th before trying to get into reverse? Sometimes its hard to go straight from 1st to reverse. I've noticed that with a lot of cars. out of habit I tend to do a 4th or 5th gear then reverse. I know with our old 92 toyota pickup you HAD to do that or it would grind.

First gear, let the clutch out slightly, until you feel the engine pull a tiny bit, then it'll slip right into reverse.

Every time. Sometimes I go as far as 1-2-3-4-5-R just to spite my car and still nothing.

Trans rebuilds are not hard or expensive if you do it yourself.. Anyone could pull it off with a shop manual.

Oh I never did what you said. That was to Jeffie. I dont think its bad enough to require a rebuild, it just gets really f'n cold here.

Linh drives around 26K a year just for work. Add in the trips to her friend in DE as with her mom in VA and you easily have 30-32K a year. Her car had around 12K when we got it last year.

    Too many miles!

This is how crooked shops make money. They tell the customer it isn't covered, make them pay for it, then collect payment AGAIN through the warranty. It's so prevalent, they will get indignant when you call them out on it.
