I have my head off and I'm putting a new one on. The intake manifold gasket had impregnated like junk in it. Do I need to clean the surface before putting a new one back on ? Also, I pulled the head and I have water around the pistons, this is normal ? and there was a tad bit of water in the cylinders, I dabbed it up with a towel, is this ok ? How clean does the block want to be before I put on the head on ? What kind of silicone gasket sealer can I use to adhere the radiator bracket to the head ?

Always use a new gasket! Also clean the seating area as best as possible. the water on your pistons most likely was caused from the head gasket leaking. It is a good thing you noticed it now and can fix it early.
