Disclaimer: I'm thinking aloud here. While I value your opinion, what you say will have no bearing on my final decision.
I've been able to get to some pretty cool places with my AllTrac:
However, in getting to these places, I run into problems...
While I'm not stuck, I'm very close to it. This is a mild road compared to most of the back roads here. Yeah, I can stick to pavement, but then I won't be able to get to the really secluded spots. I hate commercialism. Ever since I've been here, I've been sorta kinda maybe thinking about a pickup to get me there. It'd be nice to be able to throw a weekend worth of camping gear and provisions in the back and just head on out into the desert, or throw my snowboard or mountain bike in the back without worrying about getting the interior dirty.
But, as I've said in the past and will continue to say, I can't handle having a pickup as my only vehicle.
Enter my upcoming project CRX. Haul ass road car fix satisfied.
Now, as some of you may know, I'm a wrenchslinger at a GM dealer, and I just found out today that I can get any GM product at $100 over cost. Up to this point, a new pickup was out of my range, but with this discount, I'd be able to pick up a brand new, loaded, crew cab short bed 4WD Duramax 2500HD pickup for around $25,000- $28,000. MSRP is around $40,000 for these things. Penis extension truck fix satisfied.
Exit the AllTrac. I don't need three cars. That'd be greedy of me. I just want something that'll go anywhere and something that'll go like a raped monkey. If I traded in or sold the AllTrac, that could take care of my downpayment and lower my monthly payments. I had thought about keeping it and using it as my project car because of the immense potential I talk about it having. However, it's a nightmare to work on. Not hard, but just... fucking... complicated. One of the key elements to having a race car that wins is simplicity. This car ain't it. Nothing is easy to get to, and even simple repairs take twice as long as they would on a Honda. Lastly, expense and parts availability. 2500 AllTracs were sold in North America. Parts cost is on par with a new BMW. While this doesn't teter me from a daily drivers perspective, it certainly makes me think twice of making it a track whore.
So there you have it, folks. What's your take?
